The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

So somehow piled in several hours, unexpectedly a big fan. The characters are interesting, the bants is cool and some references I saw in Cyberpunk have finally been witnessed /pam param pam pam/

On the RT on vs off side of things, this scene showcases exactly what RTGI is all about:

I've been playing with RT shadows on vs off too and really, the only ray tracing worth keeping on is global illumination and reflection, the others are tiny differences prbably not even worth the slight dent in fps.

Also, why am I the one that always comes across pop-in stuff in every game lol... this is with RT shadows too:

Lastly, this definitely gives RDR2 a good fight for beautiful scenery:

I have no idea how long the game is, but looking at the map and side quests in every village etc, it must be in excess of 80 hours surely? £7 for such a lengthy story is immense.
umm you are looking at well over 200 hours of game play the game is long !

I have seen people with 4090s etc saying they have issues, some screenshots showing 39fps but no idea on the rest of their systems or state of OS/drives etc so it could be a mixed bag. It is clear that some people are having issues though, but it isn't as widespread as it is being made out it would seem.

Cyberpunk gets a 40fps hit at least when RT is turned on, so I didn't really expect much less with this, we've traded the city ambience for foliage and lots of shadows cast by all of that greenery.
Doesnt run anywhere near 60 or over with ultra 4k settings ! Anyone saying it does it lying..... 4090 here and in towns its running around 35fps max ! average of 45fps out in the wild.

I can report the GAME is BUGGED ! After changing the Graphics settings back and forward from Quality to performance it changed and worked ! I now have the Quality + Ultra everything it and gives you 90 to 100 FPS + ! So the problem is fixed ! So defo a game bug at the moment.
Sounds like DLSS mode is not kicking in when selected so that would make sense because on native I would expect 40 fps.

The DLSS version on this game is 2.4, DLSS 2.5 came out last month and you could try replacing the DLL with the latest one. I'm just playing with this now. Also as you are on an 40 series, are you using frame generation too?

Should be all good, I have 190+ hours on Cyberpunk :p

It's clear to me that rtx is just another bit of tech that has no real point in today's gaming. The fact that you can have a 4090 and not be able to max things out at 4k over 60fps seems like completely pointless tech.

I'm not sour or anything, I have a 3090 but seriously, what is the point in bringing out "next gen" updates like this aimed at current top end tier systems when those systems are substandard. It all seems very pointless.

I think poor optimisation and relying on the likes of DLSS to pull them out of the mud is a bigger problem.

This is completely incorrect.
I have played about 10 games already where RT provides substantial benefits to graphics and they still ran at smooth 60fps without issues.

Even in Witcher 3 with RT, it is possible to find settings that gives 60fps everywhere with the exception of Novigrad and Beauclair. Which is not ideal, but it is far from pointless.

RT is demanding. So what? That doesn't make it pointless.

I'm happily playing here at 60+ fps with @Paul_cz settings on a 3080 and 5800x3d and game looks fantastic, a 4090 looks like it is having no problem with fps at 4k using dlss quality, this is computerbase "user" results so, a variety of benchmarks being uploaded (and checked before allowed)

You need to accept that ray tracing is just incredibly taxing, as long as there is some form to claw back performance i.e. with upscaling and sacrificing other settings which make less of a difference to IQ then I'm good with that, if we were stuck with <60 fps no matter what was done then yes, it's not ideal but as shown, that is not the case.

Fair enough, I stand corrected. Why are we getting reports of people getting sub 60 with 4090s then?

I understand the horse power needed to run RT and that's fine but I do question the real point and relevance of it if a game as old as the Witcher 3 can bring even the highest speed rigs that cost 5k+ to it's knees.

It does make it pointless, IMO.

Raster has reached a point where modern hardware copes with ease, so RT was developed to keep hardware sales relevant. What game developers should really be focused on is what makes this game truly great; story writing and immersive characters; a huge world with great quests. But that won't make Nvidia any money, therefore broken games with RT it has to be.

Million dollar question, it's CDPR after all :p

I suspect we will see performance improve somewhat and be more consistent with a patch or 2, main thing is there appears to be some issues with cpu not being properly used.

As long as project budget allows and developers are willing to put all the time and effort (which is a lot) into getting good results from raster like what we have seen with RDR 2 but that is not always the case and probably won't be now that RT is out there to solve this issue.

Also, whilst RT looks nice, the biggest advantage of it is it will allow for more dynamic worlds i.e. better destruction since faked lighting and shadows etc. aren't "baked" in.

I owned a 3080 from launch until around 6 months ago and I can't remember any game were I stuck with RT because it improved things; it just crushes performance.

If that's progress, I'll pass (which is why I moved to 6800XT).

Can we please stop associating RT with nvidia/RTX, it isn't :p

Horses for courses and all that, complete opposite for me, played far more RT titles than raster only over the past 2 years and looking same for 2023:

- avatar - rt only title
- atomic heart
- stalker 2
- black myth
- deliver us mars
- redfall
- forza motorsport
- dying 1983
- boundary
- starfield (not officially confirmed to have rt but one of the jobs they were advertising for had mention of implementing ray tracing experience)
- the day before
- skull and bones
- ark 2 (nothing confirmed yet but I believe it is nvidia sponsored and ark 1 had nvidia heavily involved from a technical pov)
- dead island 2

As long as I can hit 60/70+ fps with RT on, I'm happy, would prefer to be hitting 110+ fps all time but I'm an IQ snob so pick your poison.
