The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

As long as I can hit 60/70+ fps with RT on, I'm happy, would prefer to be hitting 110+ fps all time but I'm an IQ snob so pick your poison.
You're probably onto something there because I'll take 90+ fps over IQ at 60-. Then again, I'm on 4k OLED v your 1440 UW so not only do I have IQ by default (I'll sometimes drop to 1440 to keep the fps high) but I was never going to get the fps at 4k with RT enabled.

This conversation is a reminder to me that PC gaming is totally varied, but at the same time I can't help thinking that when people need to explain why RT is worth it, particularly to others who have actually experienced it, then maybe that tells us all we need to know.

Raster has reached a point where modern hardware copes with ease, so RT was developed to keep hardware sales relevant. What game developers should really be focused on is what makes this game truly great; story writing and immersive characters; a huge world with great quests. But that won't make Nvidia any money, therefore broken games with RT it has to be.
Sorry but that is a stupidly zero sum argument.
You can have great quests, writing and characters (like e.g. Witcher 3 or Cyberpunk 2077 totally have) AND have awesome, more realistic graphics thanks to RTGI.

Raster can only compete with raytracing in static games that do not have changing time of day. So game like Spiderman or AC Unity or Uncharted 4 can look amazing, as good as RT games, but only because they are static.
But if you want that level of quality AND dynamic world where time flows, RT is needed.

I had to uninstall, re-download and have another go before it worked for me.

Only spent about an hour on it so far playing around but yep, a 4090 can’t cope with native with all the bells and whistles on. Had to switch to DLSS Quality in the end but it does look even more stunning than last time I played it.

It’s been so long since I last played it I can’t really compare the settings to those I used previously but the draw distance and foliage amounts seem to have been increased fairly significantly too.

Exactly all subjective at the end of the day. I have got 4k oled too but for example, much prefer playing on my 3440x1440 as "overall", it has better IQ than my LG55e7.

had another play this morning and did the following. Set 60fps in nvidia driver settings, disable v-sync and raise limit in game, reset graphics settings multiple times.

Also turn off some of the settings like Depth of Field as it just smears out all distant terrain detail etc, basically go through and play with all the processing and decide which you like

It's now running basically locked 60fps at 3840x1600 with DLSS balanced

The thing I'm noticing is the movement is really inconsistent, feels like the animation system gets in the way of immediate movement. Stood still push forward on controller, sometimes immediate movement, sometimes a 500ms delay, the camera zooms in immediately but Gerald just does nothing. So pretty sure certain animations block others which makes controls feel really sloppy and inconsistent

Anyone know if there's a mod of fix for this?

The movement has always been one of the two biggest flaws with the game (the other one being the combat), its where you can still see the age of the game. I've no doubt if it was made today it would have a different movement (and combat) system.

No patch yet?

Can't wait for the patch to fix the update patch, then the patch to fix the patch to fix the update patch. Then the patch to fix the patch to fix the patch to fix the update patch. Then it'll be fiiiine.

This is completely incorrect.
I have played about 10 games already where RT provides substantial benefits to graphics and they still ran at smooth 60fps without issues.

Even in Witcher 3 with RT, it is possible to find settings that gives 60fps everywhere with the exception of Novigrad and Beauclair. Which is not ideal, but it is far from pointless.

RT is demanding. So what? That doesn't make it pointless.

It does if you have an AMD card :p:cry:

Jokes aside how you guys getting 200 hours out of the game? I remember doing all main and side missions and was done in way under 100 hours. Maybe because I used fast travel? Or is there that many contract jobs which I did not bother with?

Fast travel would certainly cut down a lot on the playtime. I tend not to use fast travel in any game, however I also walk (not run) everywhere in Witcher 3, even on horseback I use the walk..er...I guess for a horse thats trot? :)

I think on my completionist playthrough I also visited every point of interest, got every armor, did every contract. I used fast travel but mostly in a fairly limited manner, when I had to get somewhere really far.

It's point is to make you want higher end hardware more than anything. RTX is the only thing that really pushes hardware currently as everything is console ports for the most part.

The majority still game on a 1080p 60Hz monitor and anything from the past 3 gens will do a perfectly adequate job at the resolution.

IMHO after doing a lot of checking and changing of settings, I am convinced the stuttering is not the performance, but movement related. I also agree on the combat, it is so clunky and just ends up as a button masher. Revisting this classic is not doing it any favours for me, so best to uninstall and leave it where it belongs.

Disagree there. Button mashing works when you're fighting something many levels below you. Doesn't work at all when fighting multiple enemies around your current level. You have to parry and counterattack.

I see what you guys meant about Novigrad and performance, however, it isn't hard on the CPU, it is just not optimised well at all. In some areas of Novigrad I saw 71fps, in other areas, 30fps... Nominal seems to be 30-44. Look at the RTSS stats, the CPU is not really being taxed at all still. Ray tracing off results in ~70 fps inside the city walls, but if you go inside a building, the RT on or off framerate doesn't increase vs staying outside which confirms an optimisation issue since the engine should not be rendering stuff that cannot be seen, so the framerate should be much higher indoors.

You response is addressing an argument I have not made. I know why blocking and parrying are necessary, I just find the controls and the animations clunkier than I remembered.

Right i just reinstalled on origin and for some reason there is NO option of ray tracing at all in the options, how do i get the update or the option to put ray tracing on please?

Thanks
