I mean seriously, if I wrote this down as a business plan, nobody would believe me as it would be too good to be true..
On the contrary. I think the marketing techniques used by Cowell and his cohorts are a thing of genius (this word is used far too often, but I believe it applies perfectly to this scenario).
We are now at a stage where a tv show can get the highest ratings on UK national TV. Once the show is finished (for the year), the competition winner, then goes on to produce a single which then goes on to make even more money for the XFactor team. Invariably, this single is the Christmas No.1 and is usually the highest selling single of the year. Then (and this is the real killer), the whole thing starts next year...and every year for the foreseeable future.
I mean seriously, if I wrote this down as a business plan, nobody would believe me as it would be too good to be true. Any sane individual would suggest that the person who produced this business plan is overly optimistic and is living on cloud9. The fact that it has actually happened and is continuing to happen, is almost unbelievable. And this is the reason why I say that the whole concept of XFactor is genius. There is no other word which could describe this.
The only other time I would use the word "genius" in the business world is perhaps with Google (their search engine, their money spinning adsense/adwords and Apple, with their Ipod and now, Ipad).
It's not genius. The key is to never underestimate the stupidity of the general public. Once you've grasped that concept, the world's your oyster.
Just said on the ITV News that Matt Cardle will earn an estimated 5 million in his first year.
You believe that...you believe anything.
I'm sure that the same was said about Brookstein, who is now doing gigs in empty coffee shops.
Cowell may well earn £5M in the next year, from Cardle, but I doubt highly that Cardle will make anywhere near that.

Even now, the idea of XFactor/Idol, is evolving. Next year Cowell will start XFactor in the USA, with Idol running as well. He will get a big share of the money from Idol and will get the same from XFactor (if it works out in the USA).
What is the difference between them??

On American Idol, the acts making it to the live shows are generally more talented, believable and less like council estate rejects.
