***The X-Factor Thread - ALL X-Factor Related Stuff In Here***

To be honest if she sells an album here that does ok, she'll pay back the state in tax / stimulated economy.

If you look at previous winners (or runner's up), they tend to vanish after the first single is released. And if you finish outside the top 2, you are almost guaranteed to vanish into obscurity.

At this point, she hasn't managed to break into the top 2 or 3 contestants yet.

To start talking about album/single sales at this stage is far too premature.

possibly, but she has drummed up a ridiculous amount of publicity now, which is the key.

i was praying for cher not to rap. halfway through i was like -

I was trying to expain to my wife why Jay Z made that song great and why that lass could never pull it off. The brilliant thing about hard knock life is the production, what Jay Z does best. It's not great rapping or singing, but it all works together brilliantly and is original. Anyone else trying to recreate that is always going to fail imo.

Agreed. And I hate hip-hop, with a fiery, burning passion. I'll listen to that song though, and that's saying an awful lot.

As a fan of hip-hop I cant help but cringe watching Cher. In both her performances so far it is the backing vocals which are more prominent.

If this was a singing contest then Mary, Rebecca, and John would be the ones in with a shout, most of the others would be more at home singing at their local on Friday Karaoke night.

I really can't see what half of them are doing this far in the program =/. Vast majority cannot sing (and of them the only bearable ones are Diva Fever as comic relief) and he ones that can, I really don't see making it big (Mary will be a SuBo clone, the black girl singer market is over-saturated as is with two years worth of X-factor winners and Beyonce, so choosing Treyc or Rebecca will be a waste). Of them all only John comes across as someone who could potentially achieve something.

It could be argued that this is not a singing contest. This is a contest to pick the person who will sell the most records.

Katie is terrible. Cher messed up badly during the audition process. However, the judges perhaps feel that Katie and Cher are far more marketable than those who they have booted off the show.

What they are probably trying to avoid is a situation where they have a fat/overweight/unmarketable person winning the competition, releasing 1 single which goes to No.1 and then that person goes onto completely vanish. I remember a few years ago a rather large lady won and she disappeared off the face of the planet. I'm not about the reason for this...perhaps one of your guys can tell us what happened to her and why she vanished so quickly without a trace.

Cher's voice is not good, however, to sell records you don't have to have a great voice. In fact, those with the best voices don't often sell that many records. Ultimately what sells a records is whether or not a record company are willing to back you and spend money marketing you, your music and your image.

I remember hearing an interview with a music executive and he said that it doesn't matter how good a single you have released, if a big record company want their single (even if its terrible), to get to No.1, they will market it it to high heaven and make No.1.

The point is that a singer with a good voice will probably win xfactor.
A singer with an average voice but is marketable, can sell A LOT of records.

Oh, and Susan Boyle is a VERY rare case.

But how marketable are 2 people that the judges love and have tried to put a positive swing on but are still hated by a large portion of the people watching the show. The crap they pulled during the early parts of the show have made the public turn on those 2 performers (cher and katie) so to try and force them through each round even with all the media slagging off should give them a clue that the public dont really want them.

There is a large majority of gullible idiots following like sheep but that can only be pushed so far. People want a SINGER who is likable and marketable, not a crying diva whose up her own backside and a gurning, ill looking, cheryl clone

SuBo may be a rare case but I can't see Mary as more than SuBo wannabe, even if she can sing. It's not like we've heard from Susan since she released her album last Christmas.

Yeah, but to be fair she has been a bit busy selling a gazillion albums. Just because you've not heard of her doesn't mean she isn't doing rather well for herself.

Edit: Oh, and I quite like Katie's voice. Always have, her image and antics aside based on tonights song and last week saving song I could listen to an album of that, reminds me of Norah Jones and Katie Melua.

Matt gave the best performance tonight.

Cher only looks strange because she puts on so much make-up. Without the make-up she won't look so odd.

The make-up is really caked on to her face for some reason. And would you believe, these people who cake it onto her face, are professionals.
