This Forum. Why so basic?

I'm smirking at all the "if you don't like it you can leave, you big meanie!" comments.

Anyway, the avatars are completely redundant, the smilies are basic at best but the limitations on sig size are very welcome and I couldn't care less about private messaging.

I like the "basicness" of this forum.

Well set out and uncluttered from garbage unlike most forums. Makes easy reading and easy to recognise who posters are.

When it comes to communication on the internet, minimalistic design > idiots with 600px high signatures, two of them, animated, with their own animated avatar, then added a text signature, little to no moderation, glaring contrast colours, and unintuitive navigation.

I love this forums layout over any other, well.. most of the early start ups keep this design because it works.

I worked hard for my avatar... Though one or two extra in the family could be cool :)

Everything else about the place I see as an internet standard and hate the world for having other nonsense (sig's shouldn't take up more than the post and a plus one system is just gay).

Did like the thought of adding some new chat icons too, msn and yahoo died a long while back so adding steam and youtube could be a welcome mini upgrade.

But being anti talk tap is the best, just no need on a decent smart phone for the app to exist any more.

all id like to see change is a youtube button like mentioned. Everything else is fine and keep it this way.

On a serious note, the only thing I don't understand is why they operate on 3.7, without upgrading to 3.8.

I can understand not upgrading to 4.x, but why the heck stay on an inferior version of 3.x? It makes no sense! :p

I don't like the standard font on this Forum. Not sure why... it's just so visually unappealing :p

Yes I know you can change it but no one wants to be 'that guy'.

Simple is better. I hate the changes many other forums have made ... Does YouTube count because video comments are like a forum and the whole thing is just terrible now.

So why is a computer forum that specialises in high end computers and have tens of 1000's of members have the most basic forum out there?

It isn't the most basic forum. I've seen far more basic forums.

This is a forum optimised for its purpose, without extraneous extras to clutter things up. That may well be part of the reason why it appeals to a large number of generally at least fairly well educated people.

I see a parallel with cars. Quite a few people here have an interest in cars. Quite a few have modified cars...and they're modified primarily for functionality and secondarily for elegance. You won't see many chavmobiles with dinner table spoilers, fake turbo whistles, exhausts the size of cannons (or half a dozen fake exhausts), etc, unless it's members here posting pictures of them for people to laugh at.

Wow, lots of replies, didn't expect so many replies about this subject so i'll just leave this comment here as i cba to quote every question aimed back at me.

Everyone on here seems to want the simplest most basic layout possible but they never mention the 1000's of meaningless sigs and heiracy avatars that nobody takes any notice of. So what if someone gets a different avatar when they reach so many posts. Damn, most people have 1000's of posts anyway, so what difference does a couple 1000 more posts make? Is one supposed to be proud of having reached 'wise guy status' or something? I don't get it.

Why not just abolish sigs and any other type of pointless picture if that's the attitude on here? Will make it even cleaner no doubt.

Also, i don't think for a second the forums are so popular because of it's layout. Come off it! It's popular because it's got the most diverse amount of subjects i've ever seen on forums. The user base is mainly 20-30 somethings who happen to like computers, cars and home entertainment. That's why it's so popular. Who honestly thought when they first saw this forum "Oh, i like how simple looking this is, i'll spend the rest of my life on here" I'm thinking very little people thought that but instead thought "wow, this forum has some discussions on a lot of topics, i'll bookmark is and revisit for sure"

You're misrepresenting our viewpoint.

Small amount of customisation = good as long as it's unobtrusive and somewhat standardised (sigs, avatar).

Extraneous **** like you see on other forums = bad.
