The only thing I would introduce is individual avater choice. keep the limited Sigs. not bothered about tapatalk as Chrome beta works alright on my phone to view the forum. many forums i end up recognising a poster by the avatar rather than the username. here they're (nearly) all the same so I never even bothered enabling mine.

Exactly. Anything that makes posting easier should be in every geeks interest, whether or not you have to faff about copying half a code making sure you get it bang on and testing it to see whether it works
when really it would be even simpler to enable embedding from sites such as vimeo and youtube. Do away with a youtube button altogether and just allow embed code from youtube/vimeo. This worked on my other forums 8 years ago, i mean wtf has happened on here that would disallow something so simple to work? People really are moaning and being old fashioned just for the sake of an argument i think. Probably the same type of people that moaned when xp first came out
I'm sure if this did go ahead, they would prefer it over typing the [youlube] [/youlube] code every time.

I love OcUK. I too use other forums (generally far more specific things than OcUK) and the half page long sigs make me rage!
No. That is not his original and it bugs me because I know him by his old one.
Then again, it's actually been so long now that I can't remember his old one so maybe I'll shut up

On a serious note, the only thing I don't understand is why they operate on 3.7, without upgrading to 3.8.
I can understand not upgrading to 4.x, but why the heck stay on an inferior version of 3.x? It makes no sense!
Perhaps because it works!
Why start rolling out upgrades if they could cause trouble, it's best to stay with something that hasn't caused any.
I don't care about avatars one way or the other. The limit on sig sizes is one of the best things about this forum though. Makes it much easier to follow a thread when there aren't mammoth animated sigs taking up three quarters of the page.

that is missing the point on sooo many levels.
people don't like custom avatars as you get people using stupid animated ones that annoy the hell out of people, there is just no point to them. a sig is good enough to recognise who has posted it, but end of the day, I don't generally care who posted it, if its relevant its relevant, no matter who wrote it.
adding all these extra stuff means more work for the ocuk mod team as not only will they have to keep an eye on what people post and their sig contents, but also their avatars. so you are prepared to pay their wages for this? also other addons to the site will mean more bandwidth, meaning slower loading of forum, meaning not such a good place to go. I don't get what the problem is with how it is now I really don't? why do people feel the need to think every site needs to conform to the same over the top 'lets have this coz every other site does' generic template. I cant think of any features, apart from pos the youtube button or allowed embedding, that would actually make the forum better in any way at all.

but how are all the chavs and under 12s going to let us know if they aint allowed their custom avatars, I mean, a forum with no custom avatars is just soo old fashioned. people that don't like annoying animated junk on their screen is just old and stupid. get with the times, we need to clutter the site up with useless junk, add stuff that will just slow it down and hardly get used, coz if we don't, well, we just aren't doing it right.

Ultimately, the theme is now well known, it's what the original forum was based on, it's a concept that Spie enjoyed developing. I personally browse with sigs and avatars off as I browse on my phone a lot. The one thing that would be good would be to have a "mobile" theme, i.e. sigs and avatars off. Meaning that I could enable full theme when I'm at a pc but disable it when I'm not.
However, I like the fact that there are no custom avatars, I like the rules for the sigs. The white on blue is simple, and looks professional. PMs are just not necessary with the very good trust system we've got in place. Why cram the database with meaningless ****?
I think it's because this is a tech forum that the forum is so good. They haven't tweaked or modded the hell out of it, because they understand the technology, and furthermore, they understand what the forum membership want. A quick, clean, easy to read forum, where the content and the community is more important than a fancy script laden forum with security bugs and other issues.
Ultimately, this is one of maybe 2 or 3 forums I browse as a result.

As much as I'd like a custom avatar, the downside is there will always be a bunch of people with really poor ones, like some sad old Internet joke from the late 80's.
I can't see people's sigs but I'd guess quite a few have their names in big letters? again it's just annoying (yeh I get that a 'signature' is supposed to have your name in it, it's still attention seeking)

You can get a first unread post option but that's only from the Forum Homepage when you look at thread titles underneath each individual forum. I realise that it's not quite what you're looking for and it's only useful if you wanted to look at the most recent thread but it's possibly a feature that not everyone knows about.

OcUK Dark Theme, which is user-designed and updated. I've never been tempted myself but if you want another style and don't use IE then you've got an option.

TBF, if they aren't going to give you custom avatars I wish they'd just turn them off. Getting rather bored of seeing the same 4 or 5 Hollywood actors pretending to be gangsters.

You can turn them off for yourself in your UserCP* - you will then be utterly unaffected whether other people choose to leave avatars on or not.
*Edit Options allows you to turn the display of them on or off.

I'm not so sure if this needs to be discussed any more it. The forums just wouldn't be the same with too many features.
