Tinnitus who suffers from it

How long have you had it for?
So long I do not remember

What brought it on?
no idea.

Does it bother you anymore?
no not really

And what sound do you hear?
high pitched noise

I hear a Hum in my right ear, which comes and goes. Had this for about 18months. I can also hear my pulse in my right ear.

Its weird and have found lots of people online who suffer from it, nobody really knows what the cause is.

Yea, had tinnitus for years, not too bad but when I listen out for it (if that makes sense) it really does my head in - sounds like a high pitch static noise.

I think I must have it from using headphones for years but could have been issues with sinus infections I've had over the years according to the doc.

Either way it isn't getting any worse and I can live with it but would drive me loopy if it was any worse so really feel for people that have it bad.

I read an article ages ago about a 'deep hum' or something that people can hear :p Can't find it now though!!!!

I sometimes get that variant instead of the usual high pitch noise, sometimes I prefer it.

Aye, occasionally mine gets worse...Usually stress related mind, then you go arrrrrrrrrrgh damn ears, and it spirals up :o

I've had it for the past 2 years. Initially it started as onset type where as others have said, you get an intense high pitched ringing in one or both ears for seconds at a time and then it vanishes. But about two years ago it did this and didn't vanish. I remember exactly when it did it, one afternoon working on something in front of the PC at home. Was annoyed it didn't go away as quickly as it normally did but didn't think much more of it at the time. Sort of forgot about it and then the next day it was still there.

Some days it really annoys and some days you hardly notice it. Guess it is the case that I've just got used to it now.

I think it can be in my case attributed to years of riding high performance motorcycles without ear protection. For me, that's the main cause I believe although my job has had me exposed to some fairly loud volumes of differing types ( I'm a crew commander in the fire and rescue service ). Been riding bikes since 1989 but only began to use ear protection in about 2000. Wearing ear protection on a regular basis though has you in a Catch 22 situation. If you are prone to ear wax forming, even small amounts, then pushing ear plugs into your ear regularly can cause pressure to build up on your eardrum because of the wax being pushed further into the ear. I've had my ears cleansed a good few times with high pressure water treatment to rectify the ear wax issues and whilst this is a necessary evil it can also cause slight damage itself. This could well be another compounding factor in my own Tinnitus. Also, listening to music on my iPod at full volume hasn't done me any favours I wouldn't imagine.

At my last occupational medical ( we get a comprehensive medical and fitness assessment every three years ) in comparison to my previous medical results my hearing at certain frequency ranges had dramatically deteriorated. I was still above the level required but it gave me a fright. I don't feel my hearing per sae has gotten any worse but the Tinnitus certainly has. I'm now looking at how to prevent it going any further downhill because if it gets worse it may well impact on my career. There doesn't seem to be anything one can do to make it better as far as I can tell unless anyone can put me right on that?.

There are methods you can adopt to help forget about it yes.

Last time I went to the hospital about it, they practically told me to talk to myself and say 'there is no ringing in your ears, associate it with the noise of the lamp post outside' sort of thing :p Doing that lone would drive me nuts.

Doing things like listening to static at night or calming noises (Like the ocean) can help apparently.

Ideally I want then to invent something to just fix it :p But as I understand it, it's the hairs in your ear that are damaged? Which currently are unrepairable?

I have this. I had started to become conscious to the fact it was there about maybe a year ago.
The thing where my ear goes deaf with that kind of "flashbang recovery sound" type thing, and then hearing resumes seconds later; I have been having that for as long as I can remember and never really worried that much about it. Maybe it is related to Tinitus.

Anyway, the actual Tinitus I have noticed creeping up on me the last couple of years really. I am in my late 20s. I can't really say what it has been down to. I love music, used to DJ for occasional parties and do production stuff in the bedroom. Like gamin and used to wear headphones sometimes. Nothing out of the ordinary though. I did used to liek good stereos though and had some loud subs in my cars in my teens. Maybe this did the damage. I do tend to drive with music too loud generally for my 40 minute commutes the last 5-10 years. I used to go clubbing and do remember a couple of clubs I went to as a teenager where I literally would have ringing ears and massive lack of hearing for a good 2-3 days after some nights out. Maybe this is what did it. Difficult to put it down to one thing really.

About 3 months ago I had to have my ears syringed. I do tend to get very itchy and waxy ears all my life. I had NEVER had them done before. This time the wax build up was too bad and caued deafness in one ear one morning I woke up. I had to use olive oil drops for a week to soften the wax then I went to get them done. I researched this before getting them done and did not make this decision lightly. I know there is a lot of stigma around ear syringing and people complaining that it actually CAUSED their Tinitus.

During this spell of blocked ear, I had the worst Tinitus I have ever had which caused me to focus on it a lot even dduring the day. Was mainly in my left ear. I spoke to my friend who's wife was an Audiologist, and my GP and all evidence supports getting a good syringing and that Tinitus is very unlikely from it and is practised very often.

I decided to get them Syringed even though the ear was getting better with drops. The lady was quite alright and set the machine to lowest setting. I told her I was uncomfortable getting this done. Not sure why but with my ears I am very squeamish and protective. I tense up when I put drops in them and just don't like it. i can touch my eyes and rip contacts in and out no probs, but ears....gives me shivers.

So she hooked me up and it was absolutely...wierd...and uncomfortable...and noisy and just felt wrong. Didn't like it one bit personally. Others like the feeling.

Afterwards my ears felt fragile, but clean and the releif was instant in terms of actual hearing ability. The "S"s on the end of words were so sharp, and th ekingling of my keys were so crystal clear. Everything felt a bit wierd and took a day or so to adjust. After a week or two everything felt normal again. The Tinitus, it remains but I think has improved slightly. I think I have learnt like others to try to get on with life and forget about. If you focus and hone in on the sound negatively, you are more aware of it. You just need to try to keep busy and forget it. Some days are worse than others.

I feel like my ears need syringing again even now though. They seem to build up with wax quickly. Maybe this is related to my problem.

Big hugs to all that suffer with it though as I know how difficult it can be.

Ah yes. Motorcycles. Ear plugs. Wind noise. Loud end cans. That probably didn't help mine either. Funny thing is, my hearing is actually quite good. I seem to hear things first before most people in our house and I identify noises others can't. I think part of Tinitus might be that certain people can't block out noises well or put them out of their head so to speak to relax. Like say a car alarm starts ringing a mile away, I will hear that at night and will not be able to sleep. Noises bother me more I mean.

How long have you had it for?
I've had it in my right ear for around a year and a half.

What brought it on?
Probably DJing/clubbing. I now wear protective earplugs whenever I'm out clubbing as I don't want to risk it getting worse, and I've pretty much stopped DJing because of it.

Does it bother you anymore?
Not much now. I only notice it when I'm in complete silence. It was awful when it first came on though and I found it hard to sleep because all I could focus on was that constant buzzing noise. Now it seems like it isn't as loud as it used to be, but I think I've probably just gotten used it and can ignore it to an extent.

And what sound do you hear?
A constant high-pitched buzz in my right ear.

Like others in here, I hear it only in complete silence - rarely do I become aware of it, when I do it drives me insane though. Constant high pitched whine, caused by headphones/earphones above max volume no doubt (my soundcard software can increase max volume by stupid amounts).

How long have you had it for?

Since 19 years old. So 6 years.

What brought it on?

Ironically, at a Deftones gig... :p

Does it bother you anymore?

Not really, I've got used to the annoying whistle - I'm just worried when I'm older and sitting in a quiet room, waiting for death that it'll really annoy me.

And what sound do you hear?

A high pitch whistle (like whenever a TV or computer gives off a high frequency pitch)

I dont have it now, but I did suffer with it for the better part of a year. First in 1 ear and then in both. Was a steady high pitched whistle sound, almost like bird calls. It was constant, never stopping for an instant day or night. It got quite distressing at times as it definetely had a major impact on my ability to sleep properly.

Eventually had it checked out by the doctors and it was put down to a waxy buildup in my ears, which had hardened. That helped explain why my hearing had also seemed to decrease over the same period. I used almond oil in my ears for a week or so, which softened the wax and then a nurse used this hot water jet gun thing to clean out my ears. The results were instant. A massive amount of wax came out of both ears and the ringing stopped the moment she was done. Also my hearing was right back to normal as well.

I cant imagine how people who suffer this on a long term basis cope with it. I was driven half mad with it at times, especially when there was no background noise to distract me.

After reading this thread went out today and bought earplugs literally right after I finished reading this thread.

Will wear them whenever I go into any clubs now without fail.

I plan to be in a band and one day it could end up as my career (who knows) and i'll be needing my ears then.

Im 24 so i'm sure my hearing is already a little damaged from clubbing a lot but I cant hear any ringing yet really in any form so i'd rather start preventing anything futhar now.

just a thought.... if someone with tinnitus, was to go totally deaf, would they still hear the tinnitus? i don't think i'd cope totally deaf with the whistling/ringing in my ears :/
