Today's mass shooting in the US

Yeah, everyone has a complete disregard for firearms in the US because of an accidental discharge

Oh yeah, that's the only example of accidental gun deaths in the US...

"492 people unintentionally die by gun in an average year."

I can't even find stats for accidental deaths caused by firearms in the UK. Intentional ones range from 18-84 per year.

I'm anti guns and think america is full of basket cases but 492 a year in a population of 330 million isn't that many tbh, I'm actually surprised its that low.

It's more than the zero here.

Even adjusted for population it's 3x the total average firearm deaths in the UK, including murders, suicides etc. They've had over 3,000 firearm related deaths already, in 25 days.

Well of course, there's 300 million firearms in the U.S, so why even compare?

It's the same as saying more penguins die in Antarctica compared to the U.K. It's fairly obvious that's going to happen.

a little over 1200 not including suicide, where are you getting 3k from?

Hey neighbour, I found your goalposts in my garden. Would you like me to move them back for you or will you do that yourself?

You may as well compare fatal traffic accidents in India to traffic deaths in Gibraltar though, we're a small island nation in the North Atlantic and they're half a continent with giant land borders and 5x the population. There are multiple species of large animals in North America that can kill people, people live tens of miles away from the nearest Police station, it's a vast open country. The poorest places in America are some of the roughest places in the world, conversely they have incredibly wealthy areas too. The UK is nothing like America and it's dumb to compare them.

There's some interesting data when you drill down into gun ownership in the US. Surprisingly, with there being 120 guns / 100 people, only about 30% of the adult population own a gun. With white males having the highest ownership - and within that it's heavily skewed Republican over Democrat. But the one stat I find the most interesting is that only 3% of the population own half of all the guns.

I wonder who can be bothered to check what the death to population is by animals versus by firearms?

Where I said firearm related deaths and not murders?
The suicides would have used other means.

95% of the homicides so far this year in the US weren't mass shootings, just the usual. Interestingly, the last 2 mass shootings reported in this thread happened in California, the state with the strictest gun control in the US.

Is the 'usual' guns?

If only the wild animals had got there first we wouldn't have had this problem @Roar87

It's proven that suicide rates decrease without easy access to firearms as it gives people the time to reconsider.
Putting your gun to your head and pulling the trigger is quick. Walking 3 miles to a train line, not so much.

People in the UK who have access/own to firearms tend to have a much higher discipline while handling them than average in the US when it comes to handling them which kind of skews the stats a bit. A much higher proportion are things like museum curators/keepers, professional shooters for sports or pest control, etc. etc. though I'm not so sure with the farmers, etc. some around here seem a little lapse (I've more than once seen a pile of guns just tossed into the back of a Land Rover without being checked :( :( )

Yes, that's the point... people who have guns here have to meet certain criteria. Like mental health checks, proper storage, licensing, police checks etc.

Having the proper controls, training, storage etc. reduces deaths.

Trains are a crap way to go, one of the lowest 'success' rates there is.
