Tomb Raider Thread

Just played this game for 5 hours straight, got me hooked. Well done Square, well done.

Im having major issues playing this game. Im running it on a 3 year old laptop with a first gen i7, 4gb ram and a nvidia 280m and the frame rate comes to a crawl around 40% of the time. I've tried putting the game on minimum settings(my laptop should be able to handle this game with solid frame rates on at least normal settings) but nothing changes. The frame rate is fine one second, then all of a sudden im only getting ~5 fps. This lasts for a few seconds, then it reverts to normal, then the same thing happens again.

Any ideas? I would be enjoying this game a lot more if i didn't have to put up with this. The new patch they just released hasn't changed a thing for me.

Most versions of the GTX280m are actually based on the previous gen G92b core so about desktop GTS250 performance it will get hammered by this game on anything beyond 720p type resolutions and low to medium settings.

If I get to a point where I have a low frame rate and I wait ~5 seconds(even leaving the camera in exactly the same position) then the problem will sort itself out and my frame rate will return to normal. On low settings the graphics are poor enough that my GPU should have more than enough horsepower to handle anything the game throws at it. Worst case scenario, it should get frame rate dips, but it should never bottom out for no apparent reason. This laptop has handled itself very well over the time i've had it and I have a pretty good idea of what it should be capable of.

It was suggested by a friend that I may need to increase the amount of ram available to my GPU but there is no option for that in the bios and im not about to mess around trying to update the bios on my relic of a laptop.

The beta drivers have improved it a fair bit now and its playable in its current state so i'm not going to kick up a fuss about it. I dont think I will update my laptop until the end of the year, hopefully I wont get the same issue with other games before then.

What are people getting when this crashes? I've had it fail a few times, but every time it's Steam that actually produces the error report prompt.

PLaying this and its pretty ok but where are the tombs?

The 'tombs' in this game are just optional underground caverns with a simple puzzle and a loot chest as the reward for completing it.

I completed the game earlier tonday, it was enjoyable other than the frame rate issues i've been having. I would have liked it a lot more if the game didnt slow down to 5fps in most combat sequences. It makes aiming very hard.

I would consider playing through again on the hardest difficulty(I didnt find hard too bad) but I dont think I will bother unless a patch remedies the issues im having, so I might have to wait until I get a new rig.

You should have played the whole thing on hard.

Just completed it after 23 hours. People rushing through in 8 hours missed out. It was great to just chill and progress slowly and explore and take in some of the great visuals.

Thoroughly enjoyed it. Some of the QTE's were intrusive at the start, but later they just became part of the action when needed so was ok.

Also...
The ending is clearly setup to lead into sequels. Given the unanimous positive reception this has received I can't see why they wouldn't now. I just hope they don't bash together something quick and dirty in order to get it out as fast as possible. Great care and attention has obviously gone into this, it would be a shame to tarnish it with a half arsed sequel.

I missed what was in the notebook at the end, did anyone else spot where she's heading next? Hopefully now Lara has become 'Lara', the next game will have her raiding tomb's like a good'un. Can't wait!

If that was in response to me, I did play it on hard. I thought I read somewhere that a new difficulty gets unlocked on completion but it seems I was mistaken. If i didnt have the issues I mentioned above and I wasn't deliberately trying to headshot every enemy and switch weapons for the achievements I would have found this game a breeze. It really could do with a harder difficulty.

My first playthrough took me a similar amount of time, I ended up with 91% completion, I've just go to and finish the extra objectives on each map.
