Top Gun: Maverick

The S300-400-500 series covers that role. I think the CGI artists just picked something that the audience would automatically "understand" was an anti-aircraft missile as most modern SAM's are tube launched so the audience might not understand what a big vertical tube is vs seeing lots of missiles and "getting it" without the need to explain, but yeah it's just me being excessively nerdy :D
That's a good point about modern SAM's. You also get to show the missles "locking" on by having the launcher rotate to face the jet. Saying that having a missle shoot out a tube and turn horizontal in mid air would look pretty cool.

I think its supposed to be Iran or somewhere like that - I dont think the US would risk nuclear war with Russia by destroying a uranium enrichment plant in the country that already has the most nuclear weapons lol
Scenery wise it looked too cold to be Iran. Originally I had thought it was China because previous films never had any qualms with stating that Russia is the bad guy and they had gone out of their way to keep the enemy nameless. Does china have areas covered in snow like that?

I took it to be Iran as they were the only other country to fly F-14s and are currently engaging in uranium enrichment to develop nuclear weapons.

There are snow covered mountains in Iran as well, though nowhere you could fly into immmediately from the sea. Aye

“5th generation fighters” were clearly SU-57s and I think only Russia currently operate them, but I’m not 100% on that

Though I loved the film, in real life it'd be a bit weird that they couldn't use missiles or drones to attack the bunker. Also F35C's would have been able to get a lot closer without being detected and probably guide missiles in. I also thought the story was a bit like the trench run in Star Wars!
I can see why the film is written that way though as it requires non-stealthy planes and amazing piloting to work. It'd have been a very boring film if the target was destroyed by missiles out of visual range. :D

I did some googling and the most likely answer is that it is a mish mash of countries that are not friendly with the USA. Interestingly enough there is a manoeuvre that is performed by the 5th gen fighter that I believe was CGI and I though it was ridiculous and not possible. Well it turns out it is a real move I think it is called a cobra roll

We use the F35B and Typhoon, but the UK are currently working on a 6th Gen Fighter with BAE Systems along with the co-operation of multiple other countries. The prototype/project name is Tempest.
This pleases me greatly. Good to see that we are leading the charge on this. Lets hope they don't whiff it like the Ajax.

I had the country down as Iran. Enriching uranium for nuclear weapons or something, seemed obvious, based on recent history. I think they would not want to even imply it was China, for the sake of politics, and Russia was already the bad guy in the original film.

Not sure how fun Top Gun of the future will be with 6th gen aircraft though, as they are being developed with unmanned capability and drone swarms in mind.

Whilst there is still a single plane flying which can accept a human flying it there is always the opportunity for a Top Gun "Man vs Machine" film, irrespective of how realistic it'd be.

Thats down to Lockheed Martin screwing over every foreign buyer of the F-35 by locking away all the tech data behind a paywall/security - want to know a part number, it'll cost you £3k per number etc and it'll take 2 weeks to get the info to you, and as more and more people by F-35 the costs/time just gets worse.

It seems like every country is annoyed by LM's behaviour (which they only find out about after they've signed the deal) but they love the F-35's capabilities, so BAE Systems (who are an F-35 partner/contractor) have decided to rebuild the F-35 into a more modern version but remove all the excessive paywall crap and they're hoping that doing this will be enough to push out new F-35 sales and get existing foreign owners to swap over to the new Tempest (set to fly by 2030 IIRC) rather than extend the life on the F-35's they have.

Personally I'm still waiting for the aircraft to mature into something real but, should it be a success, I'd seriously consider moving from my current job to work on it as my final aviation role before retirement, having worked on/instructed on 7 other types of military aircraft.

The suggestion was Iran, they're the only other country that has F14's.

A B2 Spirit with a couple of MOP's should have done the job nicely

[edit]Ooof... that poor orange cone...

I believe in the film they did say that they where using GPS blocking tech etc, one of the actual Top Gun pilots did say its not unreasonable that they would send more traditional jets in etc.
Think he said so much of the tech relies on constant GPS and data streams if any of that is tampered with they would go with eyes on target to give it the best success.

Just been to see it with my son and we both thought 10/10.

The nods to the original and nostalgia were absolutely superb. Don't think they could have done much better and some of the scenes were breathtaking. Had just about everything and one of the best I've seen at the cinema in a long time. I may be a little biased as the original has always been one of my fav movies. Rarely does Hollywood get a sequel right but this was awesome!

I definitely thought Iran, purely because of the Tomcats.

I've read a few reports that the F35 has some pretty significant issues that are unlikely to be easily rectified, so working on a successor is a very good idea.

Saw this at the weekend. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

One thing that bugged me as I wasn't sure/didn't pay close enough attention to notice at the time. Did Maverick/Rooster fly solo in their planes during the final mission or did they have co pilots? I know the wing men planes following them were definitely a 2 man ship. But did they not have someone else in their plane to operate their laser?
If so what happened to them when they got shot down? Was totally glossed over?

Maverick and Rooster were solo pilots, the other team were the two man planes.

Okay I assumed they must have been to have been so nonchalant with sacrificing their buddies if they had them haha. I just also thought these planes required 2 people in them so was a bit confused...
