Think I was at war with my own kind more than fighting High elf’s and the other factions.
That's normal for Dark Elves. Bit like The Empire and High Elves; you essentially start in the midst of a civil war.
Is there anypoint in playing after the campaign? Seems most of the places I need to take are hostile environments? So would be very slow progress
Depends. In terms of story, no. But certainly on the higher difficulties late-game can be quite a challenge. If you don't handle diplomacy well (and often even when you think you have), you can suddenly find yourself at war with a couple of superpowers, struggling to fend off seemingly endless stacks of high-tier troops.
