Traffic filters will divide Oxford into six '15 minute' neighbourhoods

Has any other city tried this?

Not the same but it's been put on the back burner for a while.
In Stoke the Council are thinking about shutting two major roads during peak hour to reduce pollution - https://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/new...UMZNI79ryCF6jEktcRzkv1C5EgWj6bNB6SM4cPTchuSm8
Both of the roads are a major traffic vein and closed they will cause pandemonium.
The Council can't get it in their heads that people will still use their cars but in the case of both of my daughters if they can't use Victoria Road they will use more petrol going on a 5 mile 'out of their way' drive but because Victoria Road is closed the other way will be stationary traffic causing more pollution.
The Council are thick.

If they made the A50/A500 70 or even 60MPH through Stoke it would help a lot for traffic in that region. In just bunches up all the traffic from the M6 & coming in from Derby. For me at least when limits are at 70 they flow quite well because you have slow and fast cars that can equally progress but when it is 50mph dual carriage way it turns into a mess really quickly.

I've joked that I'm going to stand for election to the council with my election platform being a promise that I will waste tax money on beer and strippers. People would vote for me in droves on the basis that I wouldn't be wasting it as badly as the current lot are.

I'm not sure that I'm joking.

I think that the council is (amongst many other things) comprised of deluded sci-fi fans. Their policy-making on the subject of transport seems to be based on the idea that people can teleport to wherever they want to go, perhaps via the Starship Enterprise. Beam me into the city centre, Mr Scott.

Also, of course, on choosing "redevelopment" on the basis of which artist's impression they think is prettiest and with complete disregard for functionality. Hence turning Hanley into a mess of roads made from bricks slopped onto a base of the cheapest filler possible, a setup that wouldn't survive the weather let alone be usable as a road. That lasted a couple of months before becoming a mess of huge potholes filled with sharp-edged bricks. Which the council had "fixed" with quick patch jobs of globs of tarmac poured into the worst holes, thus making the whole thing uglier than it was before the "redevelopment" as well as far less functional. In the worst section they claimed they'd have a "proper" patch-up done after bus companies just straight up told the council that if it wasn't fixed they'd stop the bus services entirely because the state of the road was so bad that it was causing an unsustainable rate of damage to buses. So the council had the surface ripped off for dozens of metres. And then left like that. For over a year now. But hey, they had some tarmac poured into the biggest hole so that's "fixed".

I wouldn't be surprised to one day find the road "resurfaced" with some knock-off under-spec Polyfilla alternative and some cheap black paint.

This is really bad, i dont think people understand the deeper implications of this happening. You cant visit people you want more than 15 mins away or you will be fined!!! What about your family, your mother, your girlfriend, your children etc that you may want to visit. What if you want to got for a drive to the country... Dont accept it, Oxford people didnt vote for this and they are standing up too it with protests here.

lol Puts up Katie Hopkins as proof that something is not right in the world and expects to be taken seriously.

Did you know you linked to Katie Hopkins :(

There are places in Europe, especially the Netherlands, which do it but they were purposefully rebuilt that way post WW2 after the original city was largely destroyed.

Personally think it a stupid idea especially in urban areas not built from the ground up for it.
I think MK oddly enough was built to something similar to this for a lot of it, IIRC every one of the original residential areas was built around community hubs so you had access to things like a few shops, a playing area and other ammenities that were both readily accessible by car, but also deliberately within walking or cycling distance via the various footpaths, underpasses and overpasses.

Some older towns still are basically like that by default for many things (GP's seem to be the big exception*, but it depends a lot on how they've grown over the years.

*Especially as the smaller more local practices have been killed off by a lack of available GP's, and the push after Shipman to try and do away with 1 and 2 man practices.

This looks and feels like a draconian method to restrict the freedom of movement. It's all well and good trying to push to non car use, but everything is built around cars. People can't pop down to B&Q for some timber on the bus and/or train.
I've been to Oxford a couple of times and they had already done a lot. We ended up having to park at a park and ride and get the bus into town. It worked well to be fair, but being a resident there locally I'm sure is a different matter.
Tell that to the potty Greens who rule Brighton council there used to be two lanes on teh seafront and that reduced to one as they put in yet another cycle lane (theres another along the prom adjacent to it) that nobody uses. Meanwhile traffic has to squeeze into this single lane for most of the front its bad enough now off season but can you imagine when the summer arrives. There was of course a big hoo haa and much public fury but nothing came of it and then they wonder why they've suddenly got a problem with air pollution from all the vehicles stuck in stationary traffic barely moving...

Actually I'll take some of it back about the Katie Hopkins video, the first 3 minutes is worrying and then the bitch can't help herself and goes down the Covid conspiracy route.

Forget 15 minute neighbourhoods.

In my city, Sheffield, they've approved the building of a 39 storey skyscraper that will be "a multi-level mixture of residential, entertainment & retail". Essentially a 15 minute BUILDING!

Multi-use buildings aren't new... like at all.

Show me on where 15 minute ghettos feature on any parties manifestos please.
Oh it's not on the manifestos, it's inferred that when one of the largest parties limit people's liberty (for instance the cynical push for Voter ID leading into ID cards which will then lead into a compellence to reveal your identity everywhere) and the other largest party says nothing or even says it's not going far enough  whilst the public still largely support both parties (>70/80%)... Well clearly the public doesn't care enough so lets push through whatever we want until we hit resistance and then dangerously call it all a conspiracy so more people fall down that hole increasingly evil rhetoric so that a few of them act violently such that enough of the populace are frightened into accepting these sorts of laws.

Then our your Masters need to be reminded who they work for and answer to.

I gave in and watched the first 3 minutes based on this. I find her criticism nonsensical. You can drive around the city and go into which ever section you want as much as you want. The city council should have saved themselves a load of hassle and said they are removing rat running and just ban cars going through the filters entirely. This half measure is adding fuel to conspiracy theorists.
