I enjoy the train ride from Zurich Flughafen down to the office (near to Rapperswil).

The double-decker trains are awesome. And the IR trains with the buffet car is great (proper linen on the tables and everything...)

But railways in Uk are so bad???

last time a took a train it was from London to Aberdeen ( 17 years ago ), it has been beautiful.

The media tend to see "trainspotters" as an easy target and stereotype them as sad little loners in anoraks n bottle glasses taking down numbers n being complete nerds.
While these people DO actually exist they are pretty rare.
I dunno why spotters are so picked on, there are a lot more boring pastimes out there.
I used to be an enthusiast but now work with the thinks and they are pretty much all the same these days, no character. I do at least indulge in two of my hobbies when there is a big kettle (steamie) around and try to get some good fotys.

British railways have never recovered from underinvestment/cutbacks and closures if the 60s. A lot of lines should never have been closed and now are phenomenally expensive to reopen.

for example the traffic today between north and southern switzerland...from the first train at 4,46 to 17:00 all train were on time
. in orario means ontime.

I have spent many a day with 2 or 3 friends and a crate of real ale riding many a Steam Train ride.
Steam + real ale + countryside = heaven

Someone told me a great trivia statistic, but I can't remember what it actually was.

It was something like "Last year in Britain there were the same number of late trains as in Switzerland.... the only difference is in Britain it has to be half an hour late to be classified as late, whereas in Switzerland it's two minutes."

No doubt one of resident train geeks will set me straight on the details!
