I actually do think there's some substance to these rumours, if we could get some sort of straight swap for Rooney then I wouldn't mind. I think Rooney is a very important player for us but his wage and the length of his contract is a bit of a concern.

I'm not really sure how good Cavani is though...

While a very good point - I just dont see why we are going after a £56m striker in the first place (with or without Rooney) - ignoring headline - writer-itis (ie trying to make the figure as large as possible), given how much PSG paid for him initally ( if of course all the stories at the time were correct), its not likely to be much cheaper than this so this figure is all too believable.

The other thing is with the love-in which appears to be in place between RvP and LvG, surely RvP and Cavani cant play in the same 11 (unless LvG moves RvP back into Mata/ Rooney territory, and therefore surely increase RvP's injury risk) , and Cavani isnt likely to agree to move if he is going to be playing anywhere else (ie out wide, where he is reported to be unhappy@ PSG) apart from right up front.

There do appear to be a factual base for this story that continues to run, but if EW is chasing a headline signing just for the **** of it, its going to end in tears every way you look at it :(

That's my concern too. I think I said to you before I'd seen it mentioned that Woodward wanted a South American player for marketing purposes. We need someone who can swap with RvP incase he gets injured (which isn't particularly unlikely) and Rooney can do that, but if we can get some sort of decent swap deal done with Cavani it wouldn't be too bad. However, as you say, he won't want to be on the bench. Perhaps LvG might fancy two strikers, doubt it though. On top of all that, swap deals are very rare involving high profile players.

I can't see this happening, assuming it's even true, if Woodward wants a big name signing he needs to be looking at defenders/midfielders/wingers before strikers.

I think when the World Cup is over LvG and Woodward will sit down and set out a clear list of targets if the current ones aren't available. Muller has signed a new deal so there's no chance of getting him, but Schweinsteiger/Kroos/Fabregas/Sanchez etc should NOT be ruled out at all (by the club at this stage), I'm hoping we can land at least a couple of big names in the right positions, but it's not going to be easy. This summer is going to be hell. :p

I bet in 50 days time we've got a whole list of new targets and the current ones are probably forgotten.

Regardless of what people think about Wayne, you need to get someone in first who you then prove is more beneficial to the team, THEN move him on.

We've seen it time and again letting players go without adequate replacements.

Its like these nutcases who suggest dropping him and playing Danny Welbeck instead.

Like Welbeck is going to suddenly turn into a footballer overnight.

Diouf ex-Hannover (and I think Man United and Molde) on a free to Stoke. 4 year deal.

We have an Ecuadorian, that should be enough to appease Woodward :D

Fabregas will have signed by then - I have a feeling he is long gone (even if deal isnt signed yet) and RM will go after and get Kroos. I agree in principal (and yes by the end of the WC I doubt any of our current "targets" will still be viable)

hell doesnt even come close lol

Looks like Kalas is going on loan to Cologne... (link).

Not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand he's a young player and regular play will help him develop. On the other, he's a great backup option should Terry / Cahill be injured. I guess this means Zuma will be the designated CB backup?

I understand the logic of a loan, but I'd prefer to see him go to a Premiership club.

Argggghh. I don't think Costa or Fabregas will be confirmed until after the world cup now. :(

Damn World Cup spoiling our fun! :p

I'm really worried that Man U are going to have to pay even more for the best players post-WC, plus have to compete for them.

Getting Shaw bought would have been a good step, but I don't blame Southampton for waiting, it's what I would have done in their shoes.

The fun hasn't started yet.

How about Mikel to Valencia and Ramires to Real Madrid with Modric included in the deal....

That should keep you ticking over. :p

The Express says that Chelsea are after Luka Modric in exchange for Ramires and £10m :p

While Modric would be perfect to line up alongside Matic in central midfield, can anyone actually see Real letting him go? Why would they?

More fantasy-land rumours from such a quality rag!

[edit - too slow I see!]

I can't see Real letting Modric go either. They sold Ozil last season and so isn't Modders their best creative midfielder?

Lol. Don't think that will happen although I wouldn't be sad if we sold Mikel or Ramires!

Modric has been amazing for them over the past few seasons so there is no way they would let him go for Ramires + 10m. The other issue is that Ramires is really not that good...
