Why?

The transfer window has barely started, and there's loads of players out there who would greatly improve us.

Our manager, who is likely picking what players we buy, is currently as busy as he could possibly be. :p

It's not like there's a week to go, the reality is nobody outside of the club seems to have a clue what's happening and that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Failini might have a good world cup and he might think he has that area covered ;)

I don't know! I know LVG is busy and I know things will probably pick up but I worry that the best players are going to have good WCs and we won't be able to compete for them with no CL football and the like.

Yes, I'm 99% sure I'm being stupid. But upto this point I was 100% sure. :)

Also top players will want to earn close to what rooneys on, which is another problem for UTD?

Why would that be the case? If no one else will pay them more than United, why would they not come to us if we don't pay them near to Rooneys salary.

Manchester United are pressing ahead with plans to sign Bastian Schweinsteiger after identifying the Bayern Munich and Germany player as a leading midfield target this summer.

Louis van Gaal is also keen to bring Kevin Strootman to Old Trafford, but with the Holland midfielder not expected to return to action until the autumn after a serious knee injury, any prospective transfer would be unlikely to be formally completed until next year should Roma, his club, want to sell.

Although Van Gaal has made purchasing a world-class central defender his priority after the departures of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic — Mats Hummels, of Borussia Dortmund, is a target — the incoming manager is also determined to address United’s weaknesses in midfield. David Moyes, who was sacked as United manager in April, had been keen to sign Toni Kroos — in addition to one of Cesc Fàbregas, Paul Pogba or Arturo Vidal — but Van Gaal has asked the United hierarchy to focus on Schweinsteiger, Kroos’s Bayern and Germany team-mate whom he managed during his two-year spell in charge of the Bavarian giants.

Schweinsteiger enters the final two years of his contract at Bayern this summer and Pep Guardiola, the coach of the German champions, is believed to be prepared to part company with the 29-year-old for the right price. A key lieutenant under Jupp Heynckes, Schweinsteiger — who would cost about £25 million — is not thought to enjoy the same relationship with Guardiola and is willing to consider leaving the club he first joined as a 13-year-old.

United had hoped to do a chunk of their transfer business before the World Cup, but Moyes’s sacking threw a spanner in the works, especially with Van Gaal telling the club to end their pursuit of certain targets identified by his predecessor.

A deal with Southampton for Luke Shaw, the England left back, has been agreed in principle and is likely to be announced after the World Cup, with United eager to tie up other potential signings.

Ducker is pretty reliable when it comes to journalists. Fingers crossed! Just what we need. Perhaps not quite as good as he was, but ten times better than our best central midfielder, got all the experience too.

You can't pass up the chance to sign someone who isn't interested in your club really. By that logic every team in the world who didn't bid have just passed up a chance to sign fabregas :p

He was hawked round most of Europe by the sounds of it, so he was offered to lots of clubs.

Very few that can afford him so in that scenario you can assume that he was offered to United.

Schweinsteiger will be 30 soon how long do people really think a midfield general can last? And he has been with Bayern since he was 13 years old. It makes zero sense to pay over £12 million if anything because Koke and Pogba are much better alternatives.

At least Fabregas is 27 you can get five years out of him at the very top. Although you could probably get 10 out of Oliver Torres and a better player if you were patient. Ed Deadwood can spend all summer chasing the top players but i cannot help but look back at the "you never win anything with kids comment" and players like Koke,Torres,Neymar,Janujaz,Oscar who will be some of the best players around in the future.

Barcelona have the right frame of mind when they bought Neymar for £80m and i bet they will go for Koke as well which is why no one else can sign the bugger...

A good 3 or 4 years potentially, and there's no reason we shouldn't sign him AND go for someone else. Remember just how bad our midfield is, if he's open to a move, we have to go for him in my opinion, no question.

We can't just cherry pick any player we like, it helps if they actually want to join too.

I agree in terms of common sense this move makes little.

Who would you like us to sign to play central midfield then? Bearing in mind we can't really afford to take a gamble on all of the players we sign, young players might need a couple of years to come good (time we don't have).

Koke seems unwilling to leave Atletico... If he does, then Barca are the natural favourites (status, wealth, and a familiar league). As for Pogba - Juve seem to want £60m+ euros for him. He's good, but I'm not convinced he's 60m+ good, despite his age. That being said, Man U are one of the few clubs that could afford that kind of fee without it being a serious impact, so who knows. If nothing else it'd be a massive ego boost for him to have walked away from a club due to lack of playing time, only for them to shell out that kind of money for him a couple of years later.

I do agree with you regarding your overall point of age though. When you buy a player over the age of 26/27 then you're (generally speaking) buying a depreciating asset. But, given Man U's need for midfield stars, and their lack of Champions League football, I'd say over-paying a little is acceptable right now. When options are limited and everyone knows that you have money to burn, prices rise.

I'd agree that paying over £20m would represent poor long-term value, but Man U need a short term fix, and if Van Gaal thinks he's the man to turn around their midfield for the next two or three seasons, then maybe £25-30m is realistic in this particular case. Above all else Man U need to guarantee a top-four finish next season, and with transfer options (potentially) limited, and severe competition for the 4th place finish, maybe he's a good option even if he's a bit over-priced.

Not sure what's funnier, arsenal fans in mourning he's gone to chelsea or the Man U lot desperately trying to convince themselves they have bigger signings lined up, just round the corner.

Meh at first when i heard Fabregas was off to Chelsea i was disappointed but now not so much, suppose with the amount of midfielders we have there wasnt really any point in buying Fab back unless we sold one or 2 of our midfielders but that wasnt going to happen.

Going to be strange seeing Fab play for Chelsea next season. Still wish him all the best but i was really hoping Barca would have touted him to other European clubs but seems like he was set on coming back to the PL.

Now to await what Wenger has in store for us Arsenal fans ie what signings we have lined up. Hoping we sign a truly world class striker or 2, a CDM, RB and GK but knowing how frugal Wenger is...no doubt it will be some no name french african players or some equally bad rubbish lol. Already getting depressed about it now :(
