It appears the Monaco have now joined Atletico Madrid in an attempt to sign Torres:

Noooooo.

As a Man Utd fan, I hope to God Torres stays at Chelsea for another 2 seasons.
If he leaves, I think Chelsea will be difficult to beat this year and the next.
While he is there, he will get played (bizarrely) and he will ensure that fewer goals are scored.

I have no idea why so many clubs/managers are fans of his, but he must have some qualities that I cant see.
And to think that he is currently the most expensive player in Premier League history.

It has been ages since we signed someone - I'm starting to get worried. We need strikers, Alan.

There are rumours that we've agreed a fee for Mauricio Isla. I wouldn't be surprised - Pardew has wet dreams about hard-working wingers who can also play at full-back.

Unfortunately the Joel Campbell rumours have died down now Wenger is doing is annual 'Should I buy another striker? Nah, I have some wingers who could fill in' routine.

Thomas Eisfeld has signed on a permanent deal to Fulham. Showed plenty of promise but never given an opportunity to play for us! Shame :(

So, no comments about transfers from LvG earlier as suspected, but the Manchester based journalists (Ogden, Ducker, etc) are being told the following:

- Vermaelen, De Vrij, Hummels and Blind are all 'on our radar'.

- No contact made yet over Vidal.

Now, it does seem the club have stopped briefing journalists so they aren't particularly reliable, they all said we weren't in for Herrera right before he signed, and until the main story broke said we weren't in for Mata either. Shaw's information came out of Southampton.

So, out of the guys on our 'official' list:

Blind - would be a good signing, versatile player, not particularly cheap at £15m~ but probably worthwhile. Can cover in central/defensive midfield and at left back. Probably a good buy.

I'm not convinced Vermaelen and De Vrij are going to be significantly better than Jones/Smalling/Evans, but we could use one of them. Verm can cover at left back, too.

Hummels would obviously be fantastic, one of the best defenders around, but he seems a fairly unrealistic target given he'll cost £35m+ and his father and agent has said he doesn't see him moving anywhere.

Also, this is pretty good :p:

This was the Anfield boardroom after they sold him to CFC.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if LVG gives Rooney a new role, Maybe transfer him into the carrick role as the deep lying midfielder, given that he prefers 4-3-3 and RVP is without doubt going to be his lead striker

BLind over Vermallen. He's younger for a start and would be the ideal replacement for Carrick as the deep lying midfielder.

Hummels is the one they need to break the bank for not Vidal imho

I think we need both of them pretty much equally.

Still, nobody has any idea as to what sort of formation LvG wants to play, so we'll see more of that tomorrow morning.

I also think getting in a marquee player (like Vidal or Hummels) might make it a bit easier to sign other players, too.

Rumours starting today that Blind is on Barca's radar and would prefer them (1st time Ive even seen them mentioned in the same "breath") - given the huge rebuild Barca seem to want to do its not unexpected, although perhaps a little left-field (in experience terms if nothing else)

Personally I cant see any difference in the Utd need for a leading centre half and a decent box to box midfielder with a good /firm tackle - think both positions are vital.

As for Rooney being a dm, Im sure he could do it and it would certainly solve a few current problems, just not 100% sure Rooney would respond well to that positioning and even with RvP likely to be given the main striker role, I think it would be a waste of WR's talents further forward. Its also a bit of an un-necessary risk in a vital season

I also think getting in a marquee player (like Vidal or Hummels) might make it a bit easier to sign other players, too.

Very good call - and Vidal would also be a good attraction to the South American fans too (and Di Maria, although thats even less likely than Vidal)

Rooney can't tackle that well and is prone to spells of hotheadedness as well. Rooney as a DM is not a good idea in any way.

A deep lying midfielder doesn't have to be a ball winner, but someone who can set up attacks, carrick, Pirlo, scholes in his later years, all of them can't be described as ball winning midfielders, with Rooney sitting deeper and someone like Vidal buzzing around him winning the ball could work. There's this misconception that the deepest lying midfielder has to be the tough tackler ( a defensive shield) in the modern game the role has developed more into a quarterback position, someone who starts attacks from deep with a box to box midfielder next to them doing the dirty work

He is a lot less hot headed than he was a few seasons ago. Not sure thats a fair accusation any more.

This is why Rooney has lost something from his game, so much was made of his aggressive steak especially after getting sent off v Portugal, everybody saying he needs to calm down has taken the edge off his game

I know Rooney doesn't need to be winning the ball where he is but we don't have the other players around him at the moment to allow him to be something else. If we did get someone like Vidal I would imagine that Herrera and Vidal would be the holding midfielders.
