If he and Lindegard shared the gloves how can you blame only one of them?

Well if we'd signed a solid perhaps more mature keeper who didn't make those mistakes arguably lindegaard wouldn't have played as much. And we might have won the league which we lost on goal difference. It's always a risk to throw a young keeper in at the top level and it cost us.

And you wouldn't have De Gea now, with his career ahead of him, operating at the level he is.

I really, really don't understand your point.

You could blame that on any number of factors. And there is no guarantee that an experienced keeper would have settled quickly (hello, Barthez?) Basically you're talking nonsense as usual.

He blames the fact that we didn't have a Buffon or stekelenburg (only a laughing stock) in goal, because they are top dog finished articles.

The press were *****, he's not a story any longer, that's why he's not constantly being beaten up, spotlights gone, he was bedded in and sorted after 4 months, post Christmas he was immense his first season, that performance against Chelsea that year... :o

He was still questionable after that, but from last season onwards he has been fantastic

He was stilling learning his moments to come and his approach to the jump, but that was natural, he wasn't being a calamity though.

The press just seemed to jump on it. Keepers make duff punches every game, you watch them all do it. The media just smelt young blood and were absolutely on it from the get go.

I ******** hate the vast majority of pundits and media.

Just look at Lloris, going to be honest, I love his rush keeper approach, But he's had egg on his face a few times. Media haven't been all over him like hyenas.

this seems odd if true hope its not

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/apr/23/manchester-united-edinson-cavani-cesc-fabregas

but sounds like fergy , need to sort midfield? buy a striker

Assuming we keep RvP and Rooney, striker is our strongest position. Not that I'd be against Cavani, as long as it didn't come at the cost of a midfielder. Not sure why PSG would be keen to sell either, given Zlatan isn't getting any younger.

Hope we go back in for Fabregas though (no, I don't think it's likely).

Cavani has never looked like being worth anything like the money he would cost. He was a waste of money for PSG and he would be a waste of money for us.

If Utd want another striker, why not Costa? He would be a lot cheaper than the supposed £60m for Cavani.

Think Chelsea have him locked down because of Cortouis (sp?)

Hasnt really been tested at the highest level but what do you guys think of Porto's Martinez? They appear to be after the same amount as Costa, which appears a bit extreme imo, but a decent player

My point is we are the biggest/richest club in the world. Buying and playing such a young keeper week in week out is not a risk we needed to take.

He was culpable in us getting dumped out of the CL against basel and ultimately helped to cost us the league title. They estimated our cl financial losses at 20 million for that season.

Only this season is he putting out gk performances you'd expect from a 20 million keeper.

in my view we would have been better off buying a capable and more experienced keeper in 2011 for the obvious reasons above.

You havent allowed for how much extra that gk would have cost the club in 2011, and also how much the replacement would cost when that one ( most likely to be more experienced but significantly older as well) had to be replaced at some point down the line due to retirememt

That would likely cost a lot more than £20m

I have NickG on ignore, but it's nice to see that he is still posting absolutely rubbish.

Manchester United aren't the richest club in the world. 'Biggest' is a horrible term, but they are current English Champions, obviously not going to be repeated this season and have not won a European Cup for a few years.

De Gea is an absolutely fantastic goalkeeper and I have never understood NickG's immense dislike of him :o. There are not many better goalkeepers around.

Indeed. Especially when you factor in the wage differences between having De Gea and bringing in a properly senior player in 2011. 3 years on he's cemented his first place and will still be earning less than the other top keepers due to his age - and he's got his career ahead of him still so is worth more than the others.

In fact, there isn't a single argument against what they did that works. If De Gea and Lindegard had both turned out to be rubbish, then an argument could have been made against the decision. They haven't been, but even with the benefit of hindsight one person thinks it was a bad move

But that is only true if we had not lost the league and been booted out of the cl due to mistakes from de gea in 2011 and if he now stays at the club for a few years as a top keeper, which has not happened yet.

You can't say a senior keeper wouldn't have made the same mistakes, and even if he moves it would be your choice as he is under contract.
