While I don't think he's worth £24m given his age, United are in a bit of a unique position right now. They have 'money to burn' and a desperate need to get back into the top four this season, so overpaying for an experienced CB might not be the worst thing in the world.

I think splashing out the extra £15m ish for Benatia would be a better bet (he's younger and a better quality player), but if there are no other options available then over-paying in this instance would be better than leaving a gaping hole at the back.

I still think £24m is too much for a defender at the age of 30 who has not played in the PL before.

Totally fair enough - but seeing as Utd NEED an experienced CB who would you go for ( thats actually avsilable and even remotely likely)?

Grom Whst Ive read in the last couple of weeks Roma are just not interested in selling any of their core players so Strootman / Benatia and a few otjers I cant recall are just not even an option this summer

If Bamford is included in the 1st team squad will that help our quotas?
I wouldn't mind seeing him here all season and he's already said he's prepared to fight it out for a place which is what you want to hear from a young lad.

I think we would still need to lose a foreign player to meet the quota (please be Torres!). Lukaku is home-grown, so at best he takes that place.

I'd be happy to see him stay and fight for a place to be honest, and I do like his attitude. Not sure it's the best thing for his development at this stage, but maybe with Lukaku gone he'll get enough minutes to make it worth his while. Training day in and day out with Mournho can't be a bad thing either.

One season as 2nd/3rd striker at Chelsea, then a season out on loan at a mid-table Premiership side... could be worse I suppose!

Man City were told to pay €40m for Benatia and they pulled out. He's 27 so an ideal age, and Roma will sell him.

I think LvG wants a left sided (footed) defender though, but I suppose if they were amazing then it wouldn't matter massively.

Just terminate Torres contract or let him go on a free.
Let him stay as far as I'm concerned rather chelsea lost points than money;)

If only it were that easy to terminate a contract... He's on £175k / week (or £195k according to some places). Nobody is going to pay him close to that, so he has no reason to leave. He's got another 2yrs left on his contract, so barring a miracle, we're stuck with him for another two seasons.

Given the amortisation of his £50m transfer fee, he costs us around £20m per year. Shocking really.

This I don't really understand... Refuse to pay €40m for Benatia, but pay £32m (€40m) for Mangala?

Sure Mangala is younger, but he's not the player that Benatia is IMO.

Pity you can't fire the guy. He is clearly not meeting the standard required in epl.
Or do like liverpool did with joe cole and pay him to leave (not sure if true)

That was a while ago I thought, I read quotes from Roma around the time of our game last week saying absolutely no way

On a serious note, I really rate Benatia. I really want him to stay. He was one of the best, if not the best, defender in the Serie A. Now I might be biased, but the £40M price tag is justified. If Luiz is going for some £50M and Mangala is going for £30M+, Benatia should be worth around £40M.

I want him to stay, as I said, but I'd rather sell him then have him stay and have him play like ****. He apparently did that in his last year with Udinese and I would hate if it happens this year. We need all players to give their 100% if we have to fight Juve for the league. On paper, our team is just as good as Juve's, we need the will power now.

Man United is a 'dream come true' for many players. You are playing in a top league, for a top team. I don't believe that the destination is not as attractive for players due to them finishing 7th (and not playing the CL). Their manager is Van Gaal, who has played in the biggest stages. If he believes in the project United are doing, why wouldn't a player believe in the project?

Benatia has made it public that he wants an improved contract. Apparently, he rejected higher pay checks (like Napoli and Juve) because he had a verbal agreement with Roma, but there was a verbal agreement that if Roma do well in the season (Champion's League qualification??) he would get a pay rise. Roma have offered a pay rise but not as much as Benatia wants. Roma claim that the rise is as much as was promised, and offering more will start a chain reaction where other players would want a rise. On the other hand, Benatia feels that the offer from Roma is not good enough.

If any club is ready to offer £40M for Benatia, I would sell. Yes, we are losing a MASSIVE player, and the potential replacements are nowhere as good, but why keep a player when you risk him playing like crap and losing £10M+ value in a year (and potentially titles). I've seen all Roma's pre-season games, and he has been ace. he played well against all teams and looked very determined. Not sure if this determination is to impress other teams (United, Real Madrid etc.) or because he really cares about the team.

£23.7m for Lukaku?! I hope that includes a buy-back clause... if not then it's daylight robbery considering his potential.
Or it's good business again as he 'only' cost us £13m (no need to pay the add ons making it £18m) so even with any possible % of loan wages we win monetarily.

Until Mourinho buys him back in 5 years time as the new Drogba for much more? :p

Edit: I actually think he is good enough to be playing every week for any club in England right now. 33 appearances, 16 goals and 8 assists last season. Those stats are absurd for a 21 year old.
