£24m for someone who is 30 in a few months is crazy.

Why is that such a problem? It's not like your legs just fall off when you hit 30?

Besides Van Persie moved to Utd when he was close to 30 for around the same kind of fee (and I'll add he was in the last year of his contract so Utd had leverage on the fee), was that also crazy?

RvP is a top striker and pretty much won us the league 2 seasons back. A decent right back at the age of 30 is never going to be a season changer and for 24m you want someone for the future, not just 3-4 years max.

There are certain positions that are so critical that age is not such a barrier to a large transfer fee but right back and left back are not usually considered in those terms. Robben for example would be worth spending pretty big on at his age but he is world class and changes games routinely.

Yes, I didn't want Van Persie either :p

Van Persie you could at least argue would have enough impact in one season to win us a title. Miranda is hardly the world class article Van Persie was and I cannot believe there is not other options that are better long term for us to be spending that money on.

He didn't even make the Brazil squad and they flipping sucked defensively.

Van Persie isn't reliant on his pace, therefore he should be fine for a good while yet. Sure last season wasn't great, but I think under LvG - as long as he's fit - he'll be as deadly as ever.

£24m is already quite a fee for a defender of Miranda's capabilities, if he were in his prime. At 30 his "shelf life" is drastically reduced. £24m for (say) 3 to 4 years of service is a lot. He would need to be a true superstar to justify that kind of fee.

Chelsea already have a policy of only offering one-year deals to any outfield players over 30. If they were to bring in a 30 year old on a multi-year deal it would cause problems within the squad, and there is no way a £24m fee is going to lead to only a one-year deal.

I read that rumour as well. There is absolutely zero chance of Chelsea chasing Miranda. It's utter codswallop.

Chelsea already need to offload a foreign player in order to meet the squad quota (Mourinho has said as much outright). They are not going to bring in another one to make things worse. Moreover, Chelsea have no need for cover at CB right now (Terry + Cahill are starters, with Zouma and Ivanovic as cover, and Kalas out on loan to develop for the future). And there's no way they will pay that kind of money for a 30 year old to use as cover.

This is one of the most stupid rumours I've read this window. If Miranda is sold, it won't be Chelsea doing the buying.

Christensen's in the squad too so there won't be any more CB's coming.

What! I was like a fat kid in a candy shop when we bought RvP. He could play on till he is 34/25 as his game is not pace based (its awesome based!)

I knew we were bringing in a luxury at the expense of actually sorting out the areas of the team that really needed it. It was a short term band aid.

Miranda isn't worth 24m. I watched him a lot last season and he's OK but not worth that kind of money (and yes I am taking into account the extra money floating about nowadays). He's a £15m defender. Good but not great and like has been said above he ain't no spring chicken either.

The better defenders around at the mo that are potentially "available" are Benatia and Hummels.

It's not like we'd have signed a midfielder instead. :(

We'll see how short term it was over the course of this season.

Oh we could have bought plenty of other players that window as well as RvP but Fergie was never going to do that so I was/am really pleased we got him. Proven top class PL strikers are hard to come by so when one of the best becomes available its rude not to buy him.

Short term or not, I genuinely believe he won you the 12/13 premiership title. At the very least, he's the reason the margin was so big. Of course, City having an internal row and Chelsea having an early-season collapse didn't hurt either!

He was a good buy in my eyes, even if he does nothing from here on out. Sometimes a short-term fix is exactly what you need!

It's a shame Chelsea couldn't move Torres on, I guess nobody wants him. We could then have seen Lukaku develop under the tutelage of Drogba. How to be a beast 101.

I'm not sure it would have made a difference... Lukaku wants to be #1 striker, and he won't get that with Costa on the roster (at least not this season).

I'm slightly concerned about the striker situation now. Drogba is not a 90 mins player any more, and I *do not* want to be relying on Torres for anything more important than early-round cup matches. I suppose playing Schurrle up front is an option is Costa is injured, but it's far from ideal.

If Torres is sold (please please please please please), then we are critically short of CF cover. Bamford would be an option, but he'd be better served having another season out on loan.

He is a centre half for Atletico at least, not a full back.

Maturity, leadership and experience in that position can definitely win a title ( compared to what Utd have now)

His age is less of an issue to as he could certainly play for 3 + seasons in that position

Also £24m really isnt that much anymore

Edit Benatia doesnt appear available at all and Hummels is likely to cost twice as much so not really comparable in the slightest.

When a relatively unknown kid goes for £16m, dont see how an experienced defender who has won a title in one of the 2/3 best leagues in the world with two years left on his contract is goimg to go for the same price lol

I still think £24m is too much for a defender at the age of 30 who has not played in the PL before.

If Bamford is included in the 1st team squad will that help our quotas?
I wouldn't mind seeing him here all season and he's already said he's prepared to fight it out for a place which is what you want to hear from a young lad.
