You couldn't even get an injured Vermaelen for a crazy £15 mil :p

Yeah well that was because Arsenal flat out refused to sell him to us (without a player swap) and no way he's worth paying upwards of £20m for. He's already out injured for an indefinite amount of time!

No, it seems Arsenal wouldn't sell him to us without Smalling in exchange, the press all 'understood' he favoured staying in England, as far as I know.

It was pretty much Barcelona or stay on the bench at Arsenal, and it's not like Barca is a bad move...

There was talk we wouldn't consider offering him a 5 year contract (like Barca did), that may have had some bearing but it seems more likely the move died because we wouldn't swap Smalling.

Except Wenger says he had the choice between two, so you must have agreed a deal..? Unless another club was in for him, but no one else was rumoured that I can recall.

Wenger says a lot of things.

Everywhere is in agreement when they say:

Vermaelen was a target for Manchester United but they ended their interest after refusing Arsenal's demand to receive a player as part of the deal.

It's also just common sense that Arsenal would clearly prefer to sell him to Barca than potentially strengthen us, as well as sell us the club captain again. We would have had to offer them a better deal.

Edit: and we probably did have a deal agreed with the player, had been the case for a while before the transfer happened, months even.

£12m for Moreno? Still think we should have paid the £20m to sign him 6 weeks ago Newbie ;)

 12 million cash upfront rising to an undisclosed figure with addons. But I suppose your one of those weirdos that think Lallana only cost 16 million too.

If (and it is a big if) we're trying to buy these elite players then it's much more complicated.

So you've no idea if your signing anyone 'elite', lack of transfer activity could just be that, a lack of transfer activity.

£12m for Long, £16m for Rojo, £20m for Blind...Newcastle's transfer policy is looking better every day. Those are big fees for very average players.

In all seriousness hope to see Ronaldo back in England someday!

Remember these are all headline figures and unlikely to be cash in advance.

Not only that but given the new TV deal even £20m is chicken feed these days (City, Liverpool and Utd all got the best part of £100m from the EPL last season) to majority of EPL clubs.

Even the permanently broke Everton spent £28m on Lukaku earlier in the window.

Apparently he's primarily a CB.

I thought he did well at the World Cup, seems to divide opinion in Portuguese football, some think he's not great, others think he can potentially be great if he improves the mental side of his game. LvG must think he can improve the latter.

Perhaps a better buy than Vermaelen...

Similar situation with Blind.
