The more I think about this, the more I think Di Maria will be a great signing.

Sure, some of you rival fans will say it's a preposterous price, but he's one of the best attacking players in the world and is a huge upgrade regardless of what role/position we play him in. Look at what the other big clubs in Europe spend on players, PSG, Chelsea, Barcelona, Real Madrid. There's no reason we shouldn't compete with them too, despite the fact we may end up paying extra at the moment due to no Champions League, etc.

The club is in a very strong financial position, with a manager who will look to produce a title winning team within 3 seasons. That's entirely possible, with the right signings and if the right players develop as they should. We get linked with moves like this and people say it won't happen, Man Utd don't buy expensive players from Europe (as one person definitely said), and then when we finally go and do it, all of a sudden it's a bad move. :p

There isn't one player who will magically fix the squad nor can we immediately clear out the dead wood too, it's something that's going to take at least the January and next summer transfer windows. If a top class player is available and would seriously improve on what you have, you've got to go for it; all the big/rich clubs do.

As long as he settles fine, he's the sort of player who can win any game for us out of literally nothing, that's very valuable.

I really hope we see some sort of midfield reinforcement, be it De Jong, Blind or whoever, as that will at least give us some presence alongside Herrera, who is already massively better than our other midfielders. I just want to see exactly where Di Maria will end up playing... LvG must have a good idea in mind.

Di Maria would be ****ing class regardless of cost.

Reeks of the Mata signing though. Bringing in a big name/big money player to help paper over the cracks. Of course he's a huge upgrade on your entire MF but if you stop the spending with him it's borderline pointless.

Where will VG play him anyway? Ditching 3-4-1-2? CM? B2B?

Van Gaal said this a while back:

Asked about Woodward’s comments, he said in the Sunday Mirror: "It is a strategy of Manchester United to do that. At this moment, we have five No.9s and four No.10s – and we don’t have wingers to give us attacking width.

"Or, I should say, we don't have wingers of the highest level, like Ronaldo or Di Maria or somebody like that. So, I have to play in another way – and you have seen that already. I only buy when I think we need to buy – in the position that is necessary."

He specifically mentioned Di Maria by name as the kind of high level winger he'd want. This implies he might favour a change to 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, but that will absolutely require a central/defensive midfielder being signed too, which sounds like it may happen.

I genuinely think LvG just wants players who he feels will completely buy into his system and play the way he wants, and he doesn't seem to be a big fan of spending, so he must really want Di Maria. That's more than good enough for me.

Di Maria is a wide player and he can play in CM of 3. He's what we need seeing as our only other decent winger is Januzaj.

---------De Gea
Rafael Jones Rojo Shaw
----New MF Herrera
Di Maria Mata Januzaj
----------RvP

--------------De Gea
Jones - Smalling/New CB - Rojo
Di Maria - New MF - Herrera - Januzaj/Shaw

The Sunday Times are claiming that City have asked Di Maria to delay his decision so they cam attempt to do the maths of a transfer within ffp........

Sure, some of you rival fans will say it's a preposterous price....

I hadn't commented on the price because I thought its undeniable that you're paying way ott.

Di Maria's a very good player but he's not in the top 5-10 players in the world who you'd expect to command this sort of fee. Arsenal have just signed Sanchez, a just as good if not better player at a similar age and coming from a similar stature club, for around half what you're paying.

I have no problem with the argument of paying what it takes to sign a player if you can afford it and need him but you're still getting your pants pulled down whichever way you look at it.

As for your comment on him being a important signing regardless of the position/role he'll play. You can never have too many good players but as you saw with the Mata signing, you can't just rely on signing good players and expect to have a good side. Only LvG knows what he's planning and we're all going to have to wait and see who else comes in, how he sets them up and whether it works but as things stand, even with the Di Maria signing its difficult to see how Utd can put out a balanced side that gets the best out of all their star players. I think there's going to be big decisions needing to be made by LvG and like I said yesterday, I think Mata's in danger.

Since when was 44 million euros half of 60-70 million!?

Liverpool fan dismissing possible Manchester United transfer shocker.

If he decides to not sign he will suddenly become one of the best attacking wide players in the world again no doubt.
