As above, journos Utds end are reporting that the fee rises to €75m.

Edit: in fact most of the UK press are saying €75m. I only checked the Utd based press as they'd tend to get their info from Utd.

Sky still report in 48-55 million pounds as that is what the guy who leaked the new said. I will be very surprised if we pay neat 70 million quid.

I guess we'll know more when the deal is done but £55m or £60m is steep when you compare it to Sanchez and Fabregas going for £30-35m.

Doesn't matter who you support. 75 million euros or even 65 is madness. Di Maria is just not that good.

Whilst I agree anything over £50 million would be a lot, Di Maria is a fantastic player. Whenever I have watched Madrid I have often thought he was their best player by a mile.

The most important part of this transfer is that it is a world class player choosing to sign for Man Utd regardless of no champions league and all the while leaving Real Madrid (pretty much the club that most footballers aspire to eventually play for..

Seeing a player like DI Maria arrive from Madrid may change the minds of any other transfer targets that are still unsure and shows that United still have the spending power and the ability to sign world class players.

The commercial reality if that United's income will be £500m if not more in 2015 and EBITA could be in the £150m range.

With a wage bill trimmed of Evra, Vidic and Ferdinand it is in a commercial sense a price worth paying. It sends a message to players that United are building and should help attract others to the club who may have been in two minds.

This in turn supports those revenues through the commercial value of buying star players as well as returning to the Champions League.

He didn't score enough goals in a team that is built around the three infront of him, so he's carp. Is the apparent logic.

If you want to go solely on stats, he's got the same if not better Apps to Goal/Assist Ratio as Iniesta, yet nobody would have questioned spending 60Million on him 2 years ago, who'd have still been 2 years older than Di Maria.

Not really a great example. Iniesta's very much a cm and 2 years ago was not far off Messi and Ronaldo in terms of the best players in the world.

Di Maria's a very good player but you're paying top money for him.

And why does saying somebody is expensive translate to saying they're crap?

Current market rates i guess, James was never worth what Real Madrid paid, that wonder goal at the world cup easily added 20mil onto his value.

they will now look to recoup as much of that as they can.

he has the lungs on him to be good in the prem, but time will tell.

Man U fans getting all worked up over a big name, my my. Mata signing all over again.

spend all window chasing Vidal and sign someone in an entirely different position. Good stuff. Still a big club though cos it's do Maria, best player in the world innit

He's an Attacking Midfielder off the left, same as Di Maria. Xavi plays in the centre, with Busquets anchoring. They then have a front three ahead.

real Madrid, are similar. he can just work from both flanks. With Alonso anchoring and Modric along side. with the front three ahead of Ronaldo Bale and Benzema.

They do the same job, albeit in a different style, Di Maria is pace, Ineista is more trickery and sly. It's a very similar arguement to Messi and Ronaldo only from an AM point of view. Statistically there's very little between them in produce.

With the increase in Tv money most clubs are getting their pants pulled down and some of the fee's this season have been staggering. I really don't see the point of all that extra revenue if the players price has gone up 30% or more.

As said time will tell and it also depends on who else they plan to bring in before the end of the window. If this is it, well then I think it's a stupid buy. If they add a couple of players in more needed areas then well I suppose they can afford to chuck money at this player.

Not fussed about paying top money, as long as we have a plan and he'll make a difference, I'm happy.

That's the key. Nobody will care if the team are doing well.

As I originally said, the really interesting thing will be how Utd set up and how he fits into the side.

edit: @shipinabottle, disagree about Iniesta. At his best he was playing central in a 3 man midfield alongside Xavi, albeit with more freedom to get forward. Di Maria's an out and out attacking mid/winger.
