That is but I don't think we will have paid that much for him. Personally, I don't care how much we pay as long as we get some good players in. Today was one of the low point in my life as a United fan.

Neville has it spot on really, we have no choice at this point but to overspend.

Exactly, but at least we can afford it. We can get a new official noodle partner who will basically pay for Di Maria by themselves. :p

I doubt we'll pay all the money up front either, when broken down it's not quite such a crazy sounding price.

Problem ManU have now is that it's so close to the end of the window they have to spend way over the value to get players from teams who will no longer be able to get someone in to replace them till the next window. Plus teams know they're desparate.

If we get two solid central midfielders in (don't have to be top class ones), I think it'll make a really big difference. The attack will have a platform, and the defence will have a shield. We'll be able to mix them with Carrick and Herrera (and hopefully not see Fletcher/Cleverley often).

Did LvG just say he likes Vidal? VidalON :D

He did. :p

The completely ridiculous aspect to me is that Utd were lucky to have had the perfect set of opening games to be getting players used to playing together in a formation and getting a bit of confidence up before playing teams in the top 7 or so.

As it is LVG can only play with what he has (admittedly with a bit of bad luck with injuries) but things like Rojo not being available, Di Maria not being signed until the last week of the window, still having ideally a CB and one if not two CMs to come in at this stage is just laughable and what should have been straightforward games are shaping up to be a right ordeal and a matter of hoping everyone clicks in time.

Seems to be very poor management from the club side of things really.

As in the other thread, if you get Vidal and Di Maria and one/both are injured, you're back where you are. There are loads of solid players, not brilliant, but good for squad/rotation. Utd have to pick up a bunch of younger players with potential and some solid players to help beef out the squad. Seriously Mulumbu I can't see how West Brom could demand that much for him but he's a really solid midfielder, Larsson. WHile I despise Catermole completely and don't think Utd should buy him, he'd likely improve them, they have no one to just scare opposition midfielders. Young I don't think dived, had he planted his right foot Brown was coming across and would have hit him pretty hard so he jumped out of the way.

But Young jumped out of the way, having a physical intimidating player will do that to the opposition, it will make them pull out of a few more tackles, not make that run at that player now and then. Utd were so weak in that sense, even for back up you need a lot more actual ability than Catermole has, but that fight and spirit, that Keane had, not a single player really with that at the club. Jones does whack into people a fair bit when played in midfield and Rojo might scare a few people, but you need more.

Jones in midfield with Smalling/Rojo at the back, in a 4-3-3 with Di Maria wide could work okay but you can't rely on Smalling, or Jones for that matter, way to injury prone.

I guess we'll have to see what happens this week, I can't see us buying Vidal now we're getting Di Maria, as good as it would be. Even if we did sign him (or someone else), it'd still be wise to sign a cheaper player or two as you've suggested. Blind seems a likely option... massive improvement on Fletcher or Cleverley.

Q: Will you sign Di Maria? Van Gaal: 'It's not only Di Maria, it could be Vidal or Messi*. We are a big club'

*presumably a joke

Van Gaal was also asked if Kagawa could play central midfield. "I have tried him there . . he couldn't perform my wishes."
.

Does this imply he's interested in Vidal, or is he just name dropping him...

It doesn't seem an obvious name to say next to Messi (which is obviously a joke).

Oh well, this will fuel the rumours until the end of the window. I've seen £32m+Hernandez mentioned which could be viable as Juventus are very keen on him...

Fee now agreed for Di Maria. On Ssn

£63.9m

So that takes United's net spend this summer to about £137.5m, on four players (Shaw, Herrera, Rojo, Di Maria).

Using figures from transfermarkt: £82.3 + di Maria in, and £8.8m out.

A very different approach to Liverpool's transfer business. They've spent a net £55.9m (£131.6m in, including £16m for Balotelli, and £75.7 out), and brought in:

Moreno, Lovren, Manquillo
Lallana, Can, Markovic,
Origi, Lambert, Balotelli

Even discounting the sale of Suarez, Liverpool have spent less than United, and have strengthened their entire lineup (the above isn't too far off an entire new side). They now have decent quality in depth right the way through the field.

United have clearly taken the opposing view - buy a few big-money "superstars". I could understand this if United already had a top-class side and just needed a few key additions (like Chelsea did this time around), but they don't. I can't help think that taking a Liverpool-type approach would have been a better bet. With the quality they have in attack, strengthening the quality and depth of midfield and defence with ~£10-£20m players would have put them in a good position for a CL place, and given a platform to further build in coming windows.

...just my 2p.

Edit: That's also over £200m net spent since Ferguson left.

The Sam Wallace quote is totally false.

When he was speaking to SS after the game he was asked if he liked Di Maria.

He replied "Yes, I like Di Maria but I also like Messi and Vidal but we can't always get what we like now can we" as he was laughing at the question.

I think these quotes are from the separate post-match press conference for the written press.
