I told you that yesterday!

But I can't see him dropping RvP, but again, he and Rooney do get injured a lot.

Oi! I said that he'd have to pick between the two and that I reckon we'll switch to a 4-3-3 :p!

I think that it's a case of RvP being phased out to be honest, he's not getting younger and if he continues to have niggling problems this year like last then he can't be relied upon, unfortunately.

Sometimes you need the headlines and excitement a signing makes as much as you need the actual player.

Utd are at a very low point right now and need a lift. Di Maria will lift the entire club and hopefully (from Utds point of view anyway, I hope he flops) will bring out better performances from others and create a bit of a fear factor.

Well, all the headlines in the world won't help if United miss out on CL again this year. Surely that has to be the main goal this season? Difficult to do with glaring gaps in quality, compared to opponents, in midfield and defence.

And I said he'll play 3-5-2 because he doesn't want to leave one out, which he just confirmed! :p

Well we're looking to make a couple more signings, so it's hard to say anything for sure yet.

How much will he be? And how much have you see of him? Is that just based off a handful of World Cup games (well, seven I guess :p)? I seem to remember seeing something about ~£20m for him...

I've seen him a few times for Ajax, I remember he was good vs Barcelona. At the World Cup he was mostly at left back (he's CDM for Ajax), so it's not great to judge him on that.

I'm no expert on him at all, but people who are say he's pretty much like Sergio Busquets (but he's not a massive ****), sits back, reads the game well, tackles well, capable passer. Depends whether we want that, or a physical powerhouse who will hack people down, or both...

Prices I've seen quoted are £15-20m.

Yeah as I see it the sense of this deal is pretty contingent on the next week of signings, if this is the last transfer of the window for Utd then it's utterly bonkers :p

I just don't think he's tough enough. He hss a slim skinny physique not ideal for playing in England in winter and against Stoke etc. It's such a high figure he's no ronaldo or neymar (although neymar is also slim it's easier invspain than England)?

I reckon if we waited till next summer we could b get him for much less.

I was starting to get a bit excited at the prospect of Di Maria arriving, but if it's really going to cost £63m then that is hugely excessive. £50m was just about acceptable.

The problem is, United have backed themselves into a corner. They can't pull out of the deal due to the embarrassment of another deal falling through. If it wasn't for that, I don't doubt they could threaten Real with backing out and they'd be able to negotiate a cheaper deal. I mean, Di Maria has already said he wants to leave. Ancelotti has said the player has said his goodbyes before any deal has been agreed, so it's not like they could really afford to keep him at the club. Although Real aren't in a great negotiating position, United are in an even worse one.

As for cheaper wide players, United were already linked with Cuadrado and he's a very good player. Could play either side too. I'm not sure where that one went, but I seem to remember there being talk of £35m and Barca were interested as well.

But perhaps it's not a wide player that United are actually looking for. Maybe the plan is to play Di Maria in the middle. He looked fantastic there for Real last year, but United simply don't have the same quality of other central mids to support such a player. Get Vidal in there alongside him and it's maybe a different story.

£15-20m for Blind would be madness. We sold Cabaye for that much. Tiote is reportedly available for less and while he isn't as versatile he's easily the better defensive midfielder. One long ball in the general direction of van Persie during the World Cup has jacked Blind's price right up.

Blind is like Busquets in the same way Shola Ameobi is like Ibrahimovic.

United still need a CM and CB to even think about challenging Chelsea & City.

Vidal would be the ultimate dream, De Jong probably more of a realistic choice. They'll probably also look for a Blind type of player, who can play in multiple positions if they don't go for a more established defender like Benatia or Hummels.

.

He can also cover multiple positions and is a few years younger so that will hike the price up a bit.

Tiote isnt great by any means, so might as well get a bit more versatility into the squad.

I dont think anyone expects us to compete directly with City and Chelsea this season - and even with a couple more signings before next weekend the squad is still very small compared to those two clubs.

All Utd can hope for is that City and Chelsea have a few more bad days than Utd during the season (and if we can fluke a few direct points off them even better)

BBC saying Real apparently want £75mil for Di Maria??? Thats bonkers. I'd rather just spend it wisely on players we need. Just sign 2 players we need before the window closes and then wait till january or next summer...
