Manchester United target William Carvalho as Louis van Gaal looks to offload Welbeck, Cleverley and Kagawa

Dutchman anxious to beat Arsenal to £24m Sporting Lisbon midfielder as he asks club to find buyers for the likes of Danny Welbeck, Tom Cleverley and Shinji Kagawa

Manchester United are preparing to thwart Arsenal's attempts to sign William Carvalho after renewing interest in the £24  million-rated Sporting Lisbon midfielder.

A busy few days ahead, methinks!

Carvalho is a much better buy at £24m than Blind at £20m. Potential to be a world class player and would slot in perfectly as a defensive midfielder. Admittedly this purely based on other people's opinions, but he's incredibly highly rated. Not sure we'd be anything close to a cert to get him over Arsenal, though. Seems we've got a few decent options available, at least.

I think Carvalho is a cracking defensive midfielder... Earlier in the window I hoped Mourinho would offload Mikel and buy him as a replacement. Bit late in the window for that now, but he'd be an ideal signing for United. A midfield trio of Herrera, Carvalho and Di Maria would be quite a force. £24m isn't too unreasonable either. Not cheap, but not too over-inflated either considering the state of the market.

Yeah, earlier in the window they were asking for €45m (which seems to be his release clause), which is quite over the top. He also knows Rojo, which will be a small help as Rojo will be behind him in defence.

He seems to have the potential to be more than just a holding player though, he can make powerful runs forward too.

€45m would be absurd, but €30m isn't too bad at all given his potential. And yes, that's one of the things I like about him... A good holding player should be able to get forward when opportunity knocks, not just act as a 5th defender and control play from deep.

No one watches the Portuguese League do they really.

Not day in day out, no. But odd matches and highlights can be fun :)

I'll admit my interest in him only piqued this summer when we were linked with him and Khedira. Lack of PL action in the summer is a good time to review a few games from other leagues :)

If Van Gaal just gets rid of Cleverley I'd be happy. Welbeck needs to move on as well as he's not up to the task but he's not in Cleverley's category of rubbishness. Kagawa can probably still do it but we've got too many players for his position so it makes sense to get rid of all three, get some money for them and save their wages for other signings.

The thing about Blind over Carvalho is versatility, with defenders who are constantly injured and fullbacks and midfielders who are injured a guy who can basically play any defensive position and offer quality in all of them will help out a lot.

At least now pepple will be able to understand the assurances that rooney asked for from the club about new signings he was obviously aware of just how bad carrick, fletcher, etc are and was concerned that we weren't really trying to improve the squad with better players each year, just younger and cheaper.

I think, if we look back to transfer window threads from 4 years ago or so, a certain someone, I can't remember who it was, was saying that United needed to buy a left back a right back , 2 new established centre halves, 2 midfielders, and a left winger

A lot of people argued against that, because you know reasons.
