Have to admit I would be a bit underwhelmed by Lallana being a major signing, especially given some of the names we are being linked with by the foreign press.

Worth it? I remember Man U fans saying that would be too much for Baines, no? Different stages of their career but hmmm.

where does the hmm come from?

30m for a talented left back who is only 18 years old
30m for a talented left back who is almost at the end of his career.

Absolute no brainer.

It was directed at proposed spending of £27m on a 18 y/o English fullback. I wasn't suggesting they went for Baines instead. Hell of a gamble, that's all.

In one sense every player is a gamble

86m for bale was a gamble, with the rarity of top quality British talent transfering between two clubs in the same division ~£30m isnt too much to ask for an 18yo but wouldnt want it to go too much higher

It's what top players cost nowadays, from what I've seen of him he's class at 18.

27 million for a potential 15 odd years, nice business.

I've been banging on about it for years. You can't just look at transfer figures in isolation. The true value has as much to do with the players age as it does transfer fee.

When a club buys a player it's buying an asset and the lifespan of that asset is of huge importance. As G|mp says, Shaw's got 15 years of football ahead of him. If Shaw joins Utd and stays there for 15 years, even at £30m he's only cost Utd £2m per season. And even if he doesn't stay for 15 years, providing he's performing at a decent level, he'll still command a decent fee for the next 10 years.

Had Utd signed Baines for £15m (a bid that was reportedly rejected) last season, in 5 years time he's worth nothing and of no use to Utd. He'd have cost Utd £3m per season, 50% more than what Shaw's costing.
