While I'm not certain Podolski up top on his own would work for us I'd like to give it a shot. I've always liked the guy and he has a fantastic shot on him - I'm not sure he can hold the ball up to bring in our midfield runners though.
What I truly don't understand is why we are signing somebody with unfulfilled potential when we have Joel Campbell who surely has to be worth a shot - unless Wenger sees something in training that we dont (ie hes absolutely ****ing ****) or something.
Bah.
Not happy.
Wenger doesn't see, his ability to spot talent has disappeared. Campbell is very similar to Vela in play style, likes to run with it, create and has you know delivery, quality, talent, a final ball, composure, an idea wtf to do with the ball.
Wenger doesnt' like that, he wants players to run really fast into the corner then put a crap cross in. Ox currently is brain dead, he runs fast then crosses it to the far corner flag, or shoots from a stupid place. He has no composure, he has pace and physicality, something Wenger decided to prioritise but completely at the expense of actual talent and quality on the ball.
If you're fast but a bit rubbish, Wenger will start you over someone slower but actually does something useful with the ball. Hleb working hard over Reyes or Pires, both leaving because Hleb got preferred too often(both have stated this on the record and Wenger has talked about Pires leaving and being angry at the time of the cl final over this).
It's fine to have SOME players that offer more pace at the expense of quality, finding ones with pace and quality is difficult but if you want to win titles is still something you actually have to do. Welbeck isn't a surprise has he fits in exactly with what Wenger has gone for, for 8 years.
He's got pace, and strength, the fact his final ball is awful, he has no real talent and he's basically useless doesn't matter, the key things Wenger now things is useful, athleticism regardless of footballing talent, is all there.
Podolski might not be brilliant at holding up the ball to play upfront on his own, but it's his ability to run at the goal, stretch the play and offer a goal threat even when most of the team is pushed back into our own penalty box against a top team that we require. Henry didn't hold up the ball through strength and standing still, he "held" the ball(rather than hold up the ball) via getting it and tormenting the opposition, he could run wide, do a couple players and then run to the box by which time others can have caught up from the wing. We used to play at pace, none of this attempted tika take fannying around, we used to demolish teams on the break.
If we adopted that style Giroud would be abysmal, Podolski would shine. But Podolski isn't as physical as Giroud so that's a no. Arshavin wasn't physical enough so he got dropped.... etc, etc.
Wenger has no plan, if he wants to play tika taka a lazy Ozil who was always flustered under pressure is exactly the wrong type of player to buy, as is Sanchez. if you want to buy Sanchez and Ozil, play counter attacking football.. in fact most of the team, Ozil, Ox, Sanchez, Wilshere(how many times this season has he won the ball turned a player and burst 20 yards before passing forwards, he's doing that excellently), Podolski, Walcott, they are all players built for one system, but Wenger is playing the wrong system.
If you want to play tika taka you get a AMC who thrives under pressure, like Fabregas, who turns away makes the space and makes the tight passes perfectly, not the guy who gets space as a by product of Ronaldo/Benzema/Di Maria bursting forward in every direction down the pitch.
Wenger lost the plot 8 years ago and hasn't found it again. Same mistakes all last year, same inability to spot young talent, same refusal to use players like Campbell... yet buys them anyway.
Sanchez 30 mil, limited player, not good on the ball as much as finishing in the box, we have Walcott, didn't need the same type of player albeit better.
Last three years 39 goals 24 assists, not bad but surrounded by ridiculously high quality players providing him chances.
Vela, the player we had a ridiculously cheap buy back clause, last three years, 42 goals, 28 assists, would have cost 3-4mil, was EXACTLY the player we need, able to run with the ball and do something with it.
We spent more on a player we didn't need while ignoring a player we did need, who we part owned, who has scored and assisted more in a significantly less good team, being FAR more instrumental to that team and being a far harder working and more effective.
We didn't play Vela because Wenger didn't like that type of player... you know, really good. Campbell same type of player and I said I didn't think Wenger would really use him. Quality, talent and end product, no Wenger will chose pace and running a lot even if nothing comes of it, woo.
