I really don't think Welbeck is that bad a deal tbh. Not the best striker in the world, but I think he will score enough goals to be worth it overall in today's market, if he is played.

he's rubbish and it's a terrible deal.

As above, Vela, a player we somehow had some kind of ownership of still in some way(which sounds a bit illegal with the whole part ownership thing) has 42 goals and 28 assists in the last three seasons. He's a freaking beast, strong as an ox, much much better dribbler than Welbeck, as fast, better finisher by a freaking mile, can play upfront or wide either side very well. Much more creative, brilliant crosser.

This is a guy we could have bought for a few million. He's better than Welbeck in every single aspect of his game... but we let Sociedad buy him outright(that's the weird bit, I was under the impression we "sold" him for £4mil with a 3-4mil buyback clause, but somehow they paid 10+mil to remove a clause? When Arsenal could have offered 4mil and Vela could simply have said no to stay at Sociedad?) then paid more to get a player who is no where near as good? Nuts, Campbell also looks much more promising and talented than Welbeck, instead of using him we ignore him and again buy a new player who looks worse in every part of his game. It's just mental.

From the little I've seen of Campbell he seems very similar in terms of style to Sanchez. The Everton game showed how useful it is to have a proper centre forward right up top occupying CB's. Welbeck can do that.

I'm not as pessimistic about Welbeck as some of the other Arsenal fans here, I do think he'll play a part, I just wish that £16m was spent on a better defensive midfielder.

Luciano Becchio on a season long loan, hope he finds his Leeds form. :D

edit: it's until January but that'll do me.

Only time will tell. If Sanchez picked up a knock while Giroud was out, you'd be ****ed. With the way you play and the fact that in the majority of games you'll be controlling games, you can get by without another/a better DM.

And why the **** am I trying to convince Arsenal fans that Welbeck isn't that bad? :o

I chanted his name but only cos it fit the chant well :D

Any donkey could have scored goals with Snodgrass, gradel, beckford and Howson against league 1/championship defences.

"he's only scored 20 goals in three years but he's been chucked out wide for most of them".... boo hoo.

Vela, who would have cost Arsenal 4mil, has scored 42 goals in the past three years after being chucked out wide when his favourite position is centre forward. Being crap because you were played out wide doesn't excuse the fact you're crap. He's a highly limited player.

Likewise there has always been, and always will be fans who prefer a player who runs around LOOKING effective, over those who are much better players but don't do the for some reason much loved headless chicken hard working player thing.

Those fans have always been, are currently and always will be wrong. Hard working doesn't mean ****, quality is the only thing that matters. I'd again mention Berbatov, utd scored less, but that was the last squad to achieve 90 points in the league and it also made it to the champions league final. They were quality, Berbatov is quality, he got 6 goals and 4 assists in 9 games for Monaco last year, 2 in 3 games this year so far. He's a top notch player who was almost hounded out of Utd because he didn't run like a moron for no reason all the time.

That whole post he made was moronic, he included Anelka suggesting he'd been poor because he didn't do great at 23 with psg... ignoring he'd already been and showed how good he was years previously. Likewise the quality of a player is evident when they are scoring or not. Anyone with an eye can see the clumsiness of Welbeck, his poor passing, crossing and general end product. He's not getting unlucky and never shooting, he's shooting poorly, he has poor technique. He runs a lot and he's quite fast, quite strong, that's it.

All those players listed he's comparing equally like they all play in the same position. Drogba didn't score loads, wow, he didn't score loads for chelsea, he had good and poor seasons goal scoring wise but even when not scoring well he was a beast who helped the team dominate, he could occupy and bully a defence while never scoring. Welbeck will just pass the ball to the keeper or put it in row Z, when he's not scoring, he's nothing, when those other players aren't scoring, they still showed their quality.

Welbeck could easily have a season where he scores 20 goals(probably almost all tap ins) that won't change how good or bad a player he is, he could drastically improve but there is both no sign AT ALL of him improving and the talent level he currently shows is no where near enough to either improve Arsenal, be worth 16mil, to be worth 85k or more a week.

There are players who improve every year from 20-23 who might not be good enough but the trend of them improving is enough to make you think he can get better. But that is the thing WElbeck has played loads and hasn't shown any improvement in basically 3 years, in fact he's gone backwards, he had the early in the team confidence boosted form and scored a few goals, since then he's been crap against the better teams, useless throughout most games and generally not very good.
