I don't understand these players who are happy to sit on the bench earning lots of money when they could be playing regular football at a club somewhere else for a bit less money. It's so naive and short-sighted for a career that lasts less than 20 years in most cases. I'd look back on my career and regret sitting on a team's bench for years when I could have been out there playing.

I can as much as it ****s me off when they leave for it.

You can set up your kids for life if you're responsible and perhaps even their kids, I can understand taking the big pay cheque at least once in your career, especially at the end

Optimistic Gooner view on why Wellbeck is a better signing than Falcao.

Arsene was never going to put Arsenal’s financial situation at risk by signing someone on loan who you can’t guarantee will even be match fit and someone we’d have to pay ridiculously high wages.

hahahahahahah, funny link..... won't sign a player you can't guarantee will even be match fit... he signed a player on loan in the very last transfer window who was injured and then barely played due to said injury.

I do like the logic, Falcao might have cost a lot, so he would be a poor choice, thus the Welbeck choice makes sense. One player being a not brilliant choice doesn't in any way make every other player a good choice by comparison.

Falcao would financially, for us, probably be a poor choice, however Welbeck is an even worse choice.

I wouldn't be surprised if Falcao had some kind of fitness clause, if his knee goes the ability to send him back, but also insurance can cover wages. If the medical went well then getting insurance shouldn't be a problem. At least if he is fit he's a phenomenal player. By the sounds of it Falcao for Utd for the next year will cost 150k-ish a week, Welbeck will be on around half that(at least) while being a completely inferior player in every way.

Yeah but most of the players in the premier league could do that regardless, and there's plenty of opportunity for players to go into other football related fields after retiring, like punditry, commentating, coaching, scouting, etc. I guarantee they earn a pretty decent wage in any of those fields too.

If I was earning the amount the prem players earn I'd be far more concerned about how people would remember me after I'd retired than the amount of money I'd made. Cleverley will be remembered in a very negative way at United, but he could make himself a legend at a smaller club. The more time he spends warming the United bench, the less chance he has to make that happen.

This logic presumes that their career will be 20 years long(most players careers aren't that long) and that they will be good enough at a less good club.

Cleverley(and many others) fluke into big contracts at top clubs because some manager saw something in him as a 12year old kid, likes him and still has faith(based more in sentimentally than actual sound judgement) so gives him a big contract.

Cleverley lets say could be on 60k a week now, maybe 80k a week, I don't know, with a few years left. Villa might say they'll play him, presuming he's good, but he could sign for 30k a week for 4 years, and end up on the bench, and after that the best club he can sign for is a league 2 club at £500 a week.

Just because some players go on to do well after leaving a big team doesn't mean all will. Walking away from X number of millions guaranteed for the chance his career might improve is something the majority of people wouldn't do.

Seriously? Your manager talks about being a heavily bloated squad, Sandro has barely been involved in 3 of 4 seasons he's been with you, he's crap, he offers little defensively or offensively(he bursts forward often enough to get you in trouble defensively and shots so much that you have to quantify if him getting forwards is worth the defensive cost of doing so), you got 10 million for a player what 3 managers didn't think was good enough. That is a cracking piece of business, most clubs would be happy to offload him for a few million.

He didnt play much because he was really injury prone, not because of poor perforance.

I can see why we sold him... he wasnt available for selection enough. He is still a beast and an asset to any club. Him and Palacios, together with Awesome Dawson shut out AC Milan; Seedorf, Gattuso, Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva were in that team... such happy memories.

How often do premier league players, particularly those who are playing for United and still young, end up dropping out of the prem altogether? Not very often. Cleverley will more than likely end up at a mid-table prem side where he might have the chance of making a name for himself, and he'll still be earning considerably more than the average person does.

After all, most premier league players will earn more in their 15 or so year career than we will in our much longer careers, so they should have no issue living comfortably after they retire, so long as they aren't stupid with their money. Cleverley might have halved his wages by signing for Villa, but he'd still probably have been on at the very least £500,000 a year after tax, which is easily enough to live on and put plenty away.

On a side note, has anyone seen the line-up Phil Neville has suggested United could play were they to sign Falcao?

No wonder he's not gone into management, that's a bloody stupid line-up/formation.

We've loaned out Michael Keane! Jesus we are leaving ourselves a little light at the back aren't we?

Michael Keane is not the only Manchester United player to leave the club tonight - and he won't be the last. Two more exits set to be confirmed soon....
