Travellers descend on Asda car park and refuse to move in stand off with police

For starters arrest the lot of them for trespassing

Trespassing isn't even a criminal offence, so that blows your first solution out of the water

I don't think they deserve a free ride, they are usually tax dodging thieves. They would earn themselves more respect if they cleaned up after themselves though, rather than making my council tax payments go towards cleaning up their ****.

You're incorrect of course regarding it being a criminal offence.

Crown Prosecution Service said:
Part V Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 (CJPOA) s 61-80 conferred powers on the police and created offences in connection with various forms of trespass, including:

  • mass trespass
  • trespass by hunt saboteurs
  • trespass by squatters
  • nuisance caused by raves.
The Act also introduced powers to direct trespassers to leave land and amended existing legislation in relation to the use of violence to secure entry to premises

Most traveller encampments would trigger 'mass trespass'

The whole thing wouldnt be such an issue if they had some respect for where they ruck up - if they didnt leave places looking like a rubbish tip costing us thousands to clear up after them they might get a bit a slack moving about

Hell, if it was the other way around they would be welcomed... Picture it :- Rock up somewhere, clean the area with litterpicking gangs, sort and tidy any flowerbeds that needed weeding/fixing, help some older/less-able people decorate/do general maintenance, offer their skills as general labourers/builders etc at a good rate and do good work... They leave, the area is improved... A lot of people would be chomping at the bit for them to come stay on their land/nearby! "Kids, Kids!!! The gypsies are in town, I love it when they come, such lovely helpful people"

It isn't just trespassing either, there is criminal damage (in this case likely witnessed and caught on cctv), ditto to fly tipping. In the case where they park in public parks they often damage the grass, not to mention I believe there is another criminal offence relating to driving vehicles there.

Of course if you're an individual who decided to take your car down to the park and drive around a bit you might well find the police taking more of an interest.

With travelers they seem to ignore the criminality and just wait for the council or land owner to go to court.

Would be nice if court orders weren't required and the police could just tell them to move when called instead of waiting a week to do so. Certainly the change in squatting laws put that form of anti social behaviour to a quick end aside from in commercial buildings.

They should buy/rent a house and pay council tax like the rest of us.
Some tried setting up around here a few years back, residents phoning police constantly due to burglaries and what not. They did nothing, so locals took it into there own hands and burned the caravans to the ground.

News story for that? there would've been one!

If they started teargassing them and rounding them up to arrest/charge them, they would stop doing it over night.

They are a bit like squatters who will break in and completely trash a place, then wonder why they keep being thrown out and everyone hates them.

Haha we saw a bunch of gypsy kids going to Leeds on pride day.

All comming off the train no tickets get to the barriers all push through one after the other.
.one guard tries to stop them but won't touch them so they just walk around him

2 British transport police turn up and block two of them and tell them theyve got to buy tickets, they just ran round the police and pushed through the barriers again.

Police shrugged and walked off

The guard is powerless and the police are far to soft. I doubt they would be able to stop anyone who decided to do this, not just gypsies.

On your own yes. But in a group of 10+...

I mean football groups get escorted on occasion and groups of them don't seem to faze the police, it's simply because its a protected group that's the issue. Ironically the police not acting will just end up increasing vigilantism in this regard, making the travelers even more rowdy than they tend to be. It's a farcical circle of mob rule.

Well actually football mobs do get away with anything and everything when travelling together... I've seen it with my own eyes on the trains in particular..

An old boss years back had some travellers set up on some of his farm land, the cocky ****’s wouldn’t budge and the authority’s weren’t really interested.

So one Friday night he arranged for us to park our wagons literally in a circle around their little camp, edging the trailers end to end and dropped them there.

By the Monday morning they were pleading with him to let them out which he eventually did after they’d compensated him for his troubles!

They never came back. :D

standard response from some farmers is simply to get the old muck spreader out... coat the rest of the filed in **** so it completely stinks and the traveler don't hang around for too long

sadly not so practical for ASDA car park
