Triathletes

I did the UK Ironman 70.3 yesterday. Hard slog in the heat! The bike had 1748 metres of climbing and the run 900 metres so I ended up about an hour slower than the virtually flat middle distance I did last month. Hills are a real killer.

The results aren't out yet but I think I did the swim in 45 mins, the bike in 3 hrs 49 min and the run around 2 hrs 25 min.

Edit: The actual results were 45:20 swim, 3:52:40 bike and 2:14:49 run. Looking back now I think I was too easy on the run - at the end I wasn't as tired as I was last month. Didn't push hard enough at the end this time.

What have I let myself in for!? From entering the South Coast Classic on a whim, I thought I should find a sprint tri as good practise.

I'm now signed up for four including two on successive weekends!

  • Todmorden Sprint Tri - 4th July
  • Box End Sprint Tri - 11th July
  • South Coast Classic Olympic Distance - 14th August
  • Ely Sprint Tri - 5th September

Wonder if I can find any more :p.

Congrats clv, very respectable times .

Ugh well I definitely need better cycling shorts, and a better saddle, and possibly padded underwear. Getting very bad saddle sore atm.

What do you guys do for cycling in the Tri? Put on special cycling shorts or use a tri suit? Do tri suits have enough padding? Would have thought that would make it awkward for the run.

For long events (Ironman distance) everyone I know properly changes, changing tents are usually provided. An extra minute or two for each transition is totally worth it for on a 12 hour race. Having said that, I don't know anyone who changes to proper bike shorts for middle distance events. I use tri shorts with minimal padding and have no issues at all over middle distance. On of my best bits of kit, great for swimming and running as well.

Oh well that might be my first few events out the window. Cycling home from work, through a narrow cycle bit that someone has to give way in, I was already in it and someone coming the other way decided to enter from the other direction. Had to slam on my brakes, fell over as I didn't have time to clip out, and got a metal bar in my calf muscle for my troubles.

Cyclist doesn't even stop, I get cycle on home not really feeling anything other then wounded pride. Get home and the other half says "Er, Russ, your leg is bleeding?" I've got a deepish cut where the pedal hit, and a mahoosive bruise has started to form.

Iced and elevated and what not, but I can't put any weight on it :(.

Right well I probably shouldn't do the sprint tri this weekend but I'm going to anyway. Have a few to do before the South Coast Classic which I'm targeting as my first "race" (even though I'll be happy to survive the swim :p), so its all good experience and what have you.

Might have to pull out of the run given how my leg is at present but fingers crossed.

Help me out here guys.

I've just gotten a tri-suit (2XU Comp). Am I right in thinking these are supposed to be worn without underwear? If so...well an interesting problem. On my aero bars, you can see my arse through it because its stretched quite tight.

However, if I do wear briefs, they'll get heavy and feel uncomfortable for the run after swimming, won't they?

How embarrassing :p.

No underwear! It sound like it's stretched a bit too much, maybe one size up would be better?

Get a size up and get it in black!
lol, damn :p!

Training for me is on hold: got taken out by a pedestrian this morning and need at see if my knee is buggered or if I'm just being a big girl's blouse.
Hope its nothing serious :).

Well I had a whale of a time. My provisional time is 1hr14, that is from starting the stop watch 5 seconds before the swim and stopping it as I crossed the run finish line. The transitions went perfectly, I genuinely don't think I could have done any better/faster.

The cycle was incredible - a four mile climb to start with which hurt a lot (I don't have any hills to practice on), and then a steep down hill on which, according to my cycle computer, I clocked a top speed of 40.5mph!

Then I ran a ~22 min 5k which ordinarily would be terrible, but again it was hilly (where do they get those from up north anyway?) but I'm happy with it on a recovering leg and for a first Tri.

What a great experience, thoroughly enjoyed it - I will definitely be doing more.

Well I guess I can join the club now as I did my first on Sunday (Lincoln triathlon), although it was only a sprint with a 400m pool swim.

Swim was exactly what I expected at 7.25, although I'm sure the guy behind me had a thing for me as he kept going for my feet!

The bike on the other hand was hell. I'd been out on the route previously so already knew the route, but the wind was just incredible. I think in total the bike is about 15 miles and I could only manage it in 49 minutes due to what felt like a constant headwind! Every time I went on the tri bars it just felt like the wind was going to sweep the bike from under me.

I was pretty satisfied with the run, not my fastest time but what made that more painful was the fact that it was 4 laps. Would have much preferred a longer route but beggars can't be choosers I guess.

My final time was 1.23.32 and for my first tri I'm very pleased, but know exactly where I lost the time so know where to improve for next time!

Overall, enjoyed it immensely and looking forward to the club relays in august which should be interesting :D
