Turkish Grand Prix 2011, Istanbul Park - Race 4/19

Does anyone wonder if we will get to the point where people getting into Q3 will not post a time to effectively save another set of tyres to use in the race? Being P10 isnt as bad as it was, especially when you might have 1 more set of new softs to be used in a race that is a 3 stop minimum...

Agree with Alonso as DOTD. I'd still like to see Vettel in a proper battle - I don't think he'd have done as well cutting through the field as Webber did last time out.
Starting to get the feeling like back in the Schumacher days...watching just for those few precious times Vettel slips up, but feeling fairly sure I'm going to be switching off in annoyance at the end before we see the finger and the stupid Austrian anthem plays for a British team.

Of course he would have, Hamilton lost about 20 seconds with a dodgy stop.

That doesn't take into account the time lost by button for being on old tyres all the time when he started running longer. There's no reason to suggest he wouldn't have stayed ahead on the same strategy.

It's pretty obvious Button had him pegged when they were on the same strategy, again have you ever seen Lewis beaten wheel to wheel like that, especially in equal machinery, by the time it all panned out Lewis had taken too much out of his tyres and Button could pull out a gap.

It's almost like Mclaren don't want them near each other on the same strategy. I'm not saying this always happens to Button, they make appalling mistakes at times with Lewis as well.

3 stops made absolutely no sense on a track where you only gain 17 seconds on the pitstop when we have seen how quickly these tires degrade. You are much safer to cover the teams around you than try to make them run an 18 lap stint at the end and longer stints in general.

Is it just me who's getting increasingly fed up with everyone ranting on about how "amazing" this season is?

Of the four races so far, Vettel has taken all four pole positions and 93 out of a possible 100 points. With neither Ferrari nor McLaren seemingly able to do anything about Red Bull, we're currently heading for the biggest walk-over championship ever.

I don't particularly care about KERS or DRS or tyre degradation if the race result is all but a foregone conclusion, which it is at present. Only the fourth race of the season and I had little enthusiasm for the race prior to the start as I just knew Vettel would win it easily.

Oh, and Ferrari not being penalised for an unsafe release is a farce. If that's not an unsafe release then what is? Do they actually have to collide?

Yes, increasingly agree with all of this. This season isn't a patch on last year. However, must give it time I suppose.

Great race. Lots of on track action, and not just at the DRS zone. Shame to see Button's 3 stop not work out, but was a good drive all the same. Schumacher had an absolute shocker. Vettel being so far ahead is a bit disappointing and hopefully not a sign of things to come, but we'll see.

Loving this season so far though. Really enjoying the commentary and, for me, DRS, KERS and the new tyres are working together superbly to create overtaking opportunities and promote genuine racing. The Hamilton and Button duel, for example, was brilliant. I couldn't care less if DRS is 'artificial' or whatever the pessimists want to level at it, it's creating so much more on track action that I hope it's here to stay.

Well I'm certainly enjoying it. Yes, Vettel being out front is a bit of a disappointment, but I don't watch Formula 1 just to see who wins. I enjoy the racing, the overtakes, the defenses, and the ongoing duels, and those we have in abundance this year. It's great :)

Again that has happened many times in the past, cars side by side after a release with no penalties.

I really enjoyed the race despite the Mclaren strategy frustrations. With the tyre wear you never really know how they will hold up. I'm enjoying the battles and Vettel isn't that far ahead in race trim.

I'm not sure about that; the top six qualifiers did finish in the top six (compared to Massa who set no Q3 time, but he was already "down" on tires at that point). The drivers still need to be up the grid to avoid getting into scraps in the first few laps.

However, in lieu of saving tires, it will be advantageous to only do one hot-lap in each part of qualifying. This means having the speed in the car and getting a quick enough lap in first time. If the car is not fast enough to do this, will the team(s) wait for the track to rubber in, or use a second set of hard tires, or go straight for the soft tires?

I don't understand Eddie Jordans' etc excuse that Massa yielded position so it was safe?!? they could easily have collided and injured some pit crew.

Schumacher should have been penalised for hitting Petrov too, it seems they only give penalties for breaking rules if something is gained by it.

What a great race, some very good close battles up and down the field which almost played into Buttons strategy but unfortunate his hold up on the stop put him into traffic.

Red Bull still have the quickest car by some distance however Ferrari did well over the break.

Completely bored of Vettel and Red Bull, and have been since last season, but the action behind Vettel has been quite enjoyable and somewhat dynamic, seeing how the new regulations play out and watching guys like Koboyashi in a decent car, but ultimately the season is about who wins the drivers championship, and in that respect, it's totally mundane.

yup, but what can you do, they cant penalise them for having a faster car.

just got to hope the other teams can have some breakthroughs and catch up.

I don't get why they keep going on about the DRS line being right or wrong. Why not just alter the angle the wing can move?

So you maintain a long DRS zone but don't get as much advantage from the wing. So you have a long run to get a decent tow but the gain isn't so fast and huge.
