TV Licence Super Thread

Indeed. Some people confuse what 'live' means though. If you record it to watch it later for example, you still need a license. If you watch it on +1, you still need a license.

I guess the reason you can't record it is because for that you'd have to have an aerial?

I wonder if they will get it through that you can't even watch catch up at some point. I know they'd love to
They have with iPlayer, you need a licence for that, but I can't see it being pushed any further as it would start encroaching on Netflix and other on demand services.

Sorry its because I haven't had live aerial for years (at least 10) I forget you can record TV. I'm that used to on demand.
Yeah that's my bad!
No I use c4s Web service.

Ah, makes sense now. :)

We're actually using this type of service more and more, but I still prefer to series link via the aerial because the stream quality is worse. STV/ITV player, my God it's awful quality.

Only thing I use is all4 and only really for the f1.

Everything else is netflix for me

Despite the adverts, ITV player(roku) has better pq than on freeview, noticed that for live cycling in SD on ITV4.
- the unskippable adds on all4 too; albeit you can opt out by paying them both.

Netflix should have a free, with adds, model.

[see there's now a summary of Netflixs's truths for the seaspiracy documentary I linked earlier, the dolphinspalace will be asking for a "some of this is fiction" rider ]

I've just moved into my first house and I have to admit I find this whole thing a bit...80's. The immediate passive aggressive letters leave a bit of a sour taste - I totally understand why people refuse to pay this.

They're providing a service at the end of the day and it's one that I don't use. Quite why they get away with being so forward and intrusive about it is beyond me.

Absolutely not I'm afraid.

Lolwut?

You don't genuinely break the rules? Yet you watch the F1 highlights on channel 4?

Is that not breaking the rules? Any channel is considered live TV and therefore breaking the rules.

Unless you mean catch-up streaming which is different from channel 4 albeit provided by the same overall entity.
Its a bit more confusing and complicated these days as any channel is no longer considered Live TV. For example you can on a Fire TV with TV in the name scroll to channels, subscribe to Channel 4 and start watching channel 4 but not be braking the rules and not need a TV license as its not classed as live under certain circumstances despite the fact it has TV and channel in the name. It would be possible this way to watch the F1 Highlight without a license and not be breaking any rules. Not just channel 4 you can get channels via Amazon like ITV and Discovery without needing a TV license.

Ooooo look at me I don’t have a tv license crew, yawn
TV is obsolete, on demand is the future.

It's here now so why not embrace it, throw your TV package away and embrace the digital age more and more generations will continue to grow up without ever experiencing "live tv"

BBC need to accept it's old fashioned and in a dead industry, oddly iplayer was one of the first streaming services but they wouldn't embrace the future like they could have.
BBC could have been as big as netflix

iplayer came out the same year as netflix launched "watch now" but instead they stook to a dead business model

Since when does All 4 have channel and TV in the name?

He said he watched channel 4. Which isn't allowed.

he should have said F1 via catch up on all 4 .

Since they did a subscription version which has channel in the discerption. The URL is even called channel4plus. Its all a little more complicated these days as more and more places are doing online channels.
Have you heard of Amazon channels? They are sort of a hybrid between TV channels and the OnDemand Apps. You turn on your Fire TV, scroll to channel pick what you like for example ITV or Discovery and subscribe. You then get a section called channels which lists ITV or which ever channel you subscribe to, there are over 150 channels depending on where you live. You then get access to that channel at higher quality then the free OnDemand App and no Adverts. For example the ITV channel is basically the ITVhub OnDemand app only better and enhanced, its a hybrid between the free APP and TV channel. Prices range around £2.99 and £4.99 a month depending on channel.

Thanks to Amazon confusing matters its not a case anymore that any channel is considered live TV.
