Two match ban for swearing!

Very differently, but can you not see why? They're loutish prats. When one is done another will be up to something fairly soon.

I don't think the media give football a higher profile because of the players, but because of the huge popularity of the game compared to Rugby.

Thus Rugby players enjoy a level of anonymity that Football players simply don't get. This skews our perception of the relative behaviour of the respective groups of players.

rugby is massive in other country's and can only assume that the level of respect at club level is the same as international elst it wouldn't be evident in tournaments. wasn't there a couple of stories about rugby players getting into trouble last week in seperate incidents? fighting in nightclubs or something?

It still gets reported though - Ben Foden attacked a taxi the other day iirc?

Indeed, but the emphasis is not the same, neither is the profile level.

What would be considered news in regard to a Premiership Football player would just end up on the cutting floor if he was a Rugby player.

Would the stories above have been as noteworthy if not for the recent tournament. Football players in the same situation would have been front page news across pretty much every news media outlet for weeks, instead of a one day story, relegated to the sport page bylines the next day.

Rugby just doesn't have the profile or popularity of Football and that skews our perception of them.

I'd say this is partially true, don't forget that footballers are paid a lot of money which in essence makes them a viable target. Much more so for the media than rugby players.

But I believe my point still stands. The high player/fan figures probably don't correlate with the number of incidents that are reported or happen. As said it's not just on the pitch their behaviour is better, it's off it as well.

The most crucial factor though has already been mentioned. It doesn't just apply to footballers though, life in general and they're no different. They're doing what they want because they can get away it. *shrugs*

I don't accept that they are comparable in any meaningful way.

It's the same as if you compared Rugby players to Lacrosse players and saying Rugby players are hooligans based on the amount of news items they illicit from the media.

To a degree he does have previous and it could be a good way to make him stop acting like such a retarded idiot on the field.

How often does his sweary behaviour or daft thoughtless revenge fouls get him bookings or even red cards in crucial matches. At this stage it doesn't look like he's "learning" from Fergie or from experience so maybe a ban isn't a terrible idea.

However, consistancy, you see REF'S swearing at players, you can see ref's, maybe jokingly saying f off to players when they are asking for a freekick/penalty/getting in their faces, its not particularly often.

But lets face facts, swearing is a NORMAL part of our language, we all swear a bit more than usual when in pumped up, andrenaline rushing situations, so its retarded to go after people for perfectly normal language. We can pretend no one ever swears, ever, or be truthful and accept its not a huge deal. Though Rooney was specifically swearing into a camera, and its not the first time he's done that "at" the fans in that way.

Frankly I'd prefer he gets a ban and learns his lesson, eventually, than does it in the Euro 2012 final..... or more likely the group stage.

Then again a ban for the ridiculous elbow would have given him much the same lesson, been a bit more consistant with extra stupid challenges off the ball getting bans, and been a fairer decision.

FA= stupid, Rooney = stupid, two stupid decisions don't make a right one.

In regards of Rugby and Football I believe the difference is at grass roots level. When rugby players are younger they are taught to respect the referee. Do footballers have the same conditioning from a young age? Quite probably but only recently and therefore I think it will take time for it to show.

The first two things I learnt when I started playing rugby were: Play to the whistle and the referee is king. In the latter case the referee has all the power, you swear: get marched back ten. Do it again: yellow card. Lots of repeat offences by different players on your team: yellow card for the next one regardless of the severity.

The other big difference is their is a citing commission in rugby. All the games are analysed post match and anything the commission sees that was missed can get called up on. In the case of the Rooney elbow, Mark Clattenberg not seeing it would not be a good enough reason for not punishing him.

Just an unrelated tidbit for people. I believe there are more registered rugby players in the UK than there are footballers. That is to say play and train with a team.

Well said Danny, agree completely.

We need to get these role models setting an example for youngsters on the field.

No, they are not role models, they are footballers, if they were hired because of their moral standards rather than their football skills it wouldn't be much fun to watch.

+1

It's only the media that came out with the horse crap about them being role models. All because they wanted to keep the 'Sky Sports Product' clean and appealing to the worldwide consumer

So there's not a single kid in the country with a poster of a footballer on his or her wall, name on the back of the shirt etc etc.

Oh don't be so naive, of course footballers are role models and idols. How many kids do you see playing down the park trying to copy the skills and mannerisms of their favourite footballers?

They are not employed as Role Models though, so just because the media portray them as such is irrelevant.

May as well say the same about Pop Stars/Actors/Media Personalities etc.

Some are better role models than others, but it isn't a requirement of their contract to be so.

Well they should be, my 10 year old nephew has Rooney on the back of his shirt and he was in tears when Rooney swore.

Oh hang on........no he wasn't, he was jumping round the living room!

My 8 year old is exactly the same, Rooney is his favorite player. Whilst at this age he knows its wrong to swear it won't stop him when he's older and he didn't care that Rooney swore, just danced about when he scored the hat-trick.
