Tyre Nichols murder

IIRC policing isn't even the most dangerous job in terms of risk of being killed by criminals in the US, despite the cops being around them all the time (IIRC store clerks and taxi drivers have a higher death rate per capita).

I don't think thats quite the slam dunk you might imagine in proving your point. Thats a little akin to saying that formula one isn't a dangerous sport because very few drivers die these days. Well, yes, thats true but its true because they take every precaution they possibly can to minimise risk.

US cops are very twitchy and trigger happy which I would suggest contributes massively to the safety in the job. If they were far more relaxed about their job and didn't treat certain people with a healthy level of fear then that number would probably shoot up.

Danger isn't a simple idea, its multi-faceted and whether statistics say the job isn't that dangerous, dealing with armed criminals on a daily basis probably makes them think that statistics don't back up their experience and the only reason more police don't die every year is because they are so fearful.

There are clear lines they shouldn't cross but I wouldn't want to be a police officer in many areas of the US.

If so, it's such a ridiculously obvious argument that it feels like there's zero sense to be talking about it unless it's a shoehorn for something else. Are we really making paragraph long posts and taking significant time out of our days to explain to people the insanely obvious fact that people judge things based on the information they have available to them, and that this information is always incomplete? I acknowledge and appreciate your efforts in cutting through polarised arguments by restating things clearly for people on both sides, but I think sometimes in this, you yourself miss the point.

No, that’s not it - the point I’m making is that people are more likely to take liberties against disadvantaged people, whether that’s disadvantaged through physical attributes or, for example, because of how they are treated by the justice system and/or the perception that people are not going to listen to their ‘irrelevant’ voice.

Poor people and minorities that face prejudice get steamrollered in the US.

So it’s the American public that is wrong and not the overly violent mindset of some of their police?

I really don’t see how you can say ‘how dumb are Americans’.

They beat the guy literally to death. It’s disgusting.

Wow, I think you totally missed my point (re-read the second line). Damn, do you really think I'm defending the police? I'm the last person on here who would do that. I know how awful they are....and lazy.

Question, if you went on holiday to America and the police shouted at you to lay on the ground, would you lay on the ground or stand there arguing?

Of course the police are in the wrong, nobody is saying otherwise, but when you know what the police are like, why take the chance? There is only going to be one outcome.

If I stuck my finger in a lions cage and had it biten off, I'd be calling myself an idiot.

Yeah it's clear that the only thing to take away from all this is "those police bad", but George Floyd being overly manhandled while he died of an overdose is "all cops and all white people bad".

Obviously the take away is police once again abusing their power. George Floyd died from an officer kneeling on him for over 9 minutes, long after he had stopped breathing. There was a trial and a jury found those facts to the be true. Maybe you missed it.

My god do you ever shut up about wrongspeak lol. Every time someone disagrees with you or says your views are crap you pull it out lol
It's not like I want to , I wish there weren't instances where I could logically use it, but here we are. I only use it when someone speaks in a way in which they are prescribing their purported "correct" way of thinking without entering in to actual debate. The fact that I can "pull it out" often is testament to the frequency of the offending behaviour.

Yeah bro courts are 10000000% correct at all times amirite? I'm sure you'll join me in celebrating the rulings of the trials of OJ Simpson, Trump and Kyle Rittenhouse.

I see we are hearing the "if only he hadn't resisted" excuses again. Maybe he didn't trust those cops (he couldn't have been more correct not to), maybe he didn't feel they had reason to detain him. The idea that citizens should just submit to the police regardless of the circumstances is bewildering. No one should want or accept living in such a society.

That old chestnut.

The biggest killer of US police is normally traffic accidents and heart attacks, often whilst they're heading into or home from work or whilst performing things like "pitt" manoeuvres when they get it wrong and don't kill passengers in the other vehicle (or random drivers in other cars that hit the overturned target car) , over the last few years it's been covid (odd how they'll shoot someone and claim they feared for their lives, but were actively refusing to take covid precautions).

I'm specifically referring to gunshots and officers killed in action, not the 450 officers killed by Covid19 in 2021, or natural causes. Thanks though.

It's not an excuse. Nobody should live in a society like that, and the entire police culture needs to change....but when you know how bad they are, why resist? He's paid with his life! It's just not worth the risk. Like you say, you shouldn't have to submit to the police, but if you don't, you die. I'd rather be alive than a martyr. Fight the battle another day.

If you are ever stopped by the police you should totally try that one, just ignore them and carry on with your day...please.

Even if there was history between these cops, their department and Nichols, the footage I've just seen on BBC doesn't justify the beating and death.

Seems so surreal that it all goes on while their body camera films the whole incident and not one cop appears to question how the arrest is playing out.

An outcome is caused by a chain of events. Often breaking just a single link in that chain can change the outcome.
It could be that not acting in that manner against the officers would have been enough to keep him alive.
Might not have made a difference.

Because people react differently when faced with a fight or flight situation. Maybe he saw how the police were behaving towards him and his reaction was to want to get away as he feared how he was going to be treated and the footage has shown he was right to fear them. His actions aren't why he is dead, their actions are why he is dead. The problem here is the police, sadly there seems to be no intention to actually do anything about it. The police are far too protected, they are public servants and should be held to a higher standard and when they abuse their authority they should pay a higher price for that abuse.

Trump hasn't been on trial, yet. Rittenhouse under the laws of that state was innocent. Now you might not agree with their laws but that is irrelevant. OJ Simpson was as much about the times it happened in. Also the prosecution did a terrible job.

Please show me a clip of him resisting, no one as yet have provided me with one.

I will try and find one, but basically the police asked him to lay down at least five times. He didn't, he was half laid down asking questions. They then asked again saying if he didn't he would get tasered, at which point he jumped up and started running (massive mistake).

Now, you could say none of that (leading up to the taser point) was resisting. My take on it, is that America loves guns. They adore them, second amendment this, second amendment that. Fine, but the consequence is that you don't know who's carrying and who isn't. The police are on edge as anyone could have a gun. This means that whilst you might not be resisting, you need to following instructions to the letter, so when they say lay down, you bloody well lay down. Hell, this isn't even up for debate.....just look at all the hundreds of videos over the past 40+ years.

What happened next, the beating was totally out of order and I would hope they all end up in jail. There is no excuse for what the police did, and I am not trying to defend them in anyway shape or form. What I'm saying, is that the police are so bad, you have to follow instructions if you don't want to end up dead.

What we hope/want American society to be like isn't the reality. Until the public have confidence in the police (which will never happen because they love guns) this will happen time and time again.

So victim blaming. The outcome is from a group of officers that felt like they could do as they pleased and could beat a man to death because they felt he either didn't respect them or just because he ****** them off.

Until there is a seismic change in how they police this will continue to happen.

No I agree with the Trump/Rittenhouse verdicts, my point is that many who use the ruling of the court in the George Floyd case don't respect other court rulings.
