Tyre Nichols murder

total disgrace - at least the police department quickly got rid of the officers involved and started proceedings against them this time.

So at least some of these guys were part of an Elite unit, called SCORPION

Under pressure over rising violent crime, Memphis in October 2021 created SCORPION, which stands for Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in our Neighborhoods. Its mandate is to stem homicides, assaults and robberies.

Critics say these types of task forces often use aggressive tactics, operate without adequate oversight and harass communities of color.

It's looking more and more like an episode of The Shield! As I said previously I can imagine this isn't the first beating they've given out, so are used to acting with impunity, its just they took this one too far and the guy died.

This whole “he resisted arrest” argument is stupid.

I just watched the first section of video again.

Compliance was basically impossible, they’re screaming at him to lay on the ground which he is doing, however the officers have hold of his arm so he can’t lay flat.

The whole time - it’s just a maelstrom of total chaos, eventually they try to taser him and he legs it, and I don’t blame him for that.

So yes - technically he resisted arrest, but I think it’s stupid to really labour that point, because the arrest itself was so violent and incompetent - most reasonable innocent people would react in the same way.

There's something deeply wrong with police recruitment in the USA.
It's not so much the recruitment it's the fact that their society is awash with guns, if you knew a job involved putting your life on the line everyday would you want to do it? Being in the sort of environment where just doing your job could result in you being shot either attracts a certain sort of person or eventually results in developing a certain mindset (becoming highly aggressive) just to cope with the constant levels of anxiety.

I honestly get that and agree 100%
But there's a big crossover when you start tag teaming a guy to hospital.
It's an insanely difficult job. Yes, no wonder it breeds animals.
The minute he ran he had it coming.
He would have been better off being shot maybe.
American cops are vindictive psychos.
Hindsight is 20/20.....
This doesn't justify the outcome, don't try and bend it. He ran. He gambled. Fight or flight. Whatever. The power trip cops lost their minds. All 5 shall rot in hell.

To respond to this point only as this was edited in after I posted previous reply;

At no point is what I posted even bordering on apologist territory, that's just all you and anyone elses view/perception on what I posted. This is only cold logic which doesn't care for feelings and doesn't take any sides to it, other than what the logic is about (that running is a bad idea as the US Police can interpret it how they like and they have the guns and manpower over you and so, the outcome of running almost always leads to escalation which usually is fatal in the US, when the "not resisting" is less likely to lead down this chain of events). And that remains, even you admit, to be correct.

And that is the only reason why I have been posting that the "do not resist the arrest" is a valid piece of advice. Nothing more.

If you have a crusade to go on (not you NVP in particular, but if you are on one, carry on), by all means continue do so. But don't mix an analysis of a particular statement that is accurate with something that has nothing to do with anything else on politcal sides.

Did you watch the video? Because I think that's where our discrepancy is coming from, you appear to think he ran from the police  before they started to assault him. Once that assault began he was lwgally entitled to run for his life. Yes, you keep stating that the police see that as resisting arrest, but that leads the victim in a catch 22.

Your whole argument is based on the fact that this killing is more justifiable because he should have expected it for running in fear.

You can try to state how you're just being factual, but I think you might need to research your statistics a bit before trying to do so.

Yes, you're the one who ranted on about people saying "Merry Christmas" to you. Then proceeded to rant about skin colour and Christian ancestry. But let's not bring up the past :).

Sorry, no clue who you are.

It's not justifiable because he ran in fear(it's human reaction) but it is what triggers the 5 to do what they did. In their twisted minds they are countering some imperceivable threat.

I'd rather be assaulted and get my day in court than get killed like a dog on the street.

And for all the people saying if he had just done as he was told (exactly and immediately in a stressful situation) then he'd have been OK, Daniel Shaver would like a word

Ok then I guess the only thing to do is never stop if the police pull you over and be ready to shoot your way out of every situation.
I mean the cops literally execute 1000s of people a day for following their commands.
/Rolls eyes
I completely and utterly agree some cops are animals and aren't mentally fit for the job, when we compare it to European policing.

No and i didn't mean to imply that there was if that's how it came across. I'm just saying that this sort of behaviour is to be expected when you subject humans to a constant level of anxiety, that's not to excuse that behaviour but unless you (third person you) identify the triggers you'll never do anything to address the behaviour.

You can either remove yourself or the trigger, something I'd say is not possible as you need police and America is never going to remove guns from society, or you can teach the person to recognise the triggers of the destructive behaviour and methods to cope with it.

They can't get much lower, infact they will turn away people that do too well on the test

I've seen that before too, but if the range they want is 20 - 27 on the test and the average is 21 or 22 (corresponding apparently to an IQ of 104) then they could in fact go a lot lower; as scary as it sounds a majority of the US or indeed UK population would achieve a lower score than that.

Disclaimer, there is plenty of BS in IQ testing too and it's kinda iffy (and can be affected by things like nutrition and other early environmental factors, the dodgy bits come when people make genetic/heritability claims) but for the sake of argument, if the African American IQ is 85 then you're looking at a far smaller portion of that population who are even capable of passing such a test.

Though it's not just psychometric testing, things like examinations for promotion to sergeant are an issue too, there are quite clear performance differences between groups in higher education too (some top US universities seem to actively discriminate against Asian applicants for this reason) but seemingly when a similar pattern emerges in professional examinations in the US then people can start suing in court claiming disparate impact and objective testing needs to be scrapped.

Why have lower IQ cops though?

Is it some sort of idea to prevent cops from questioning things?

I’d have thought if you have more intelligent people, they’d be better at making decisions under pressure or in difficult situations.

Seems strange.

I do agree with the point that IQ testing is a bit iffy.

According to that article: too high IQ cops will get bored and leave the job early. And they don’t want to invest a lot in police training for them to leave.

Reading between the lines, they probably want people who don’t ask questions and just do the job.

Probably the same as being overqualified for a job, they assume you won't stick around after wasting all the time/money training you.

I guess there’s a cost associated with it. Ergo you get people who are idiots, can’t control themselves, can’t reason and end up beating innocent people to death….

Seems totally self defeating.

Well there are rumours going around that he was dating the ex wife of one of the police offers and that they wanted to teach him a lesson. Guess that's a good reason for the stop...

100% your just on the wind up now.

"good reason" for the stop was him dating one of the cop's wifes....Come on even you must know how ridiculous you sound trying to justify the "stop"

I dont believe that to be the case in this instance, they were punishing him. They weren't scared at any point in time when they had him held on the ground shouting at him.

I'd rather be assaulted and get my day in court than get killed like a dog on the street
For all we know he ran to avoid being killed in the street like a dog.

His post is quite clearly suggesting that it would not be a good reason for the stop, but that this may have been their motivation for doing so. He even put dot dot dot. Come on dude :p
