UEFA Euro 2012 - Group D - ** spoilers ** (England, France, Sweden, Ukraine)

what more does ashley young have to do to get dropped?

He would have to have a backup that would do as good a job as him. The last couple of games he has been dire but he has been played really out of position in his defence. He has helped us through a few England games recently with goals and assists which is why he will be kept. If he is played on the wing and has a decent game, he is by far our best option there.

i'd get out the blocks fast with oxc on the left and walcott on the right. kill the game off early with 2 upfront and then rest them.

Exactly this. Let's just bloody go for it and don't sit back after 1-0, especially if it looks like they're there for the taking. Much better than drawing/losing after 70 minutes and needing to bring players, who were being rested, on to run around like madmen for 20 minutes.

Has Ox played on the left wing for Arsenal? or at Southampton?

i'm not sure but pace is key here and he's full of pace. can't afford to give them to to think let alone get into the game.

if we start dithering, trying to pick out a pass, pass in triangles with a slow tempo i think i'm gonna go nuts. we can beat this team, easily. so let's get the bulk of it done early so we can sit back towards the end and rest players.

Nope, that's just Welbeck, he's actually not bad in the 6 yard box, though, most players aren't. Give him the ball 30 yards out with one guy to beat and a goalie and I'd give him less than most in terms of chance to score. He doesn't take people on, and his passing isn't very good, his crossing and general interplay isn't very good. Still don't rate him in the slightest, you can get footballers who are deadly in the 6 yard box and brilliant at everything else, and you can get players only good at one thing who cost you everywhere else. THink he offered next to nothing in the first game, next to nothing in the second game, and will offer next to nothing in the third game.

You actually couldn't be more wrong if you tried

i'm not sure...
Nice and bold in theory, but maybe too big of a gamble as it would be vital for it to work? I think the squad is too thin on quality, if our players blow their wad against Ukraine and end up knackered, then it just massively amplifies the already intense difficulty of beating Italy or Spain.

I don't think we can afford to have Oxlade & Walcott playing 90 minutes if we're still chasing a goal towards the end of the match. Arguably their pace is better exploied in the final 20-30 minutes when the opponents are tiring.

If we went 4231 it might be possible to accommodate Gerrard playing behind Rooney, but I don't like the idea of two defensive midfielders, so that would force Milner into partnering Parker. Not ideal...

It's going to be typical England, play ok in first half, majority of possession maybe 1 goal and then fall to bits for the first 35mins of the second then play their best football in last 10 mins.

I don't think Ox works well on the left, although he has played their occasionally (Lallana plays left mid for Saints). Walcott has played on the left in the past albeit when he was at Saints so I could see him working well on the left and the Ox on the right.
Another possibility would be having Ox through the middle with Gerrard on the right seeing as his crosses were so effective the other night.

The team for tonight (not officially confirmed but 99%):

Hart

Johnson, Terry, Lescott, Cole

Milner, Gerrard, Parker, Young

Rooney, Welbeck

I was browsing FIFA 12 videos on youtube, and came across this suggested formation and squad selection that EA reckons is the winning formula for England in UEFA EURO 2012 (in the game anyway):

Granted it's from FIFA 12 EURO 2012 game, but do you think it could work?

Personally, I think you'd need rooney where gerard is, young where rooney is on the left, walcott where carroll is and ox where henderson is - if it was ever going to be that formation, which I doubt. Would be an interesting formation for England to try at some point though, whether it's in this tournament or not.

No, I don't think it'd work. There's value in a 4-2-3-1 with gerrard and Parker holding, a goal scorer (ie Defoe) up top with either young or ox left and Walcott or Milner right depending on how attacking you needed to be.

I think tonight's game will go one of two ways. Either we'll smash them or it'll be a tight, nervy affair. Obviously the latter is most likely.

Not bad, I suspect Ox and Walcott will be brought on late on to inject some pace, especially as it's likely to be a tight game.
