UK Government set to ban disposable vapes

Better than nothing, but should really ban all vapes except for prescriptions for those who really need them.

The same industry that killed many millions of people with cigarettes are only interested in replacing their addictive product with another.

The moral thing to do is wind down those companies as smoking ends and lock up all the execs for many millions of counts of murder.

This is good news. I'm sure people will get hold of them somehow if they really want but it'll help. Vaping (and smoking) should be banned in public all together in my opinion. I hate when I 'm walking a long and someone blows it into your face. I always think to myself how they would feel if I went and farted in their face.

I don't understand why there are so many vape shops either, we have 5 or 6 where I live but not a single Greengrocer, heath food shop, butcher or bakery (unless you count Greggs)

Good news imo, the amount of vapes flashing away in the middle of the road that people throw out their window when done with is making some streets look like they've got Christmas lights on now it's dark in a morning.

Following your logic its almost full on insane police state where you can basically do nothing.

For example, only meat/eggs/dairy/ Fruit + veg, then say rice + bread + pasta, everything else = banned. Although tbh maybe i'd ban the rice/bread/pasta

Of course get rid of alcohol, and all drugs for that matter, including most prescription drugs and over the counter drugs

Now mandatory exercise program, body fat % limits.

Ban gambling of course, ban porn, ban forums, and social media.

Now vaping might be bad for you too, but all of the things above are worse.

We could argue about whether other things should be banned, but this isn't the thread for it. You're right I'd take action on some of those things. I think that's the right thing to do, so I don't view your criticism as criticism.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm a big freedom lover, but the way you've worded it makes it sound like a pretty good recipe for a powerful nation to me. It's not obvious that doing those things would only be negative. Of course, the population would have to be in at least majority agreement with it.

Remember when confectionary got shamed off the shelves near the check out?

In their place in my local home bargains is disposable vapes and high calorie ‘protein bars’.

It’s not like home bargains is a small independent shop where shop staff make decisions. This is a massive retailer with proper systems and process in place. Someone with seniority has clearly made the choice to place the products there.

As for the ‘protein bars’, they are usually at least twice, if not three times as calorie dense as a bag of haribo. No one who isn’t a high level athlete should be touching those with a barge pole.

They are not the only ones either, profit before people and all that.

Could even have a youth programme to get everyone off to a good start. No idea what we could call it though...

Err, that's not choice or shame.

Large shops are now obliged by law to remove HFSS foods from specific areas. A senior decision would have been made on the next best thing to fill the spots with though.

Small shops dodge all that.

Those rules to remove confectionary were as a result of a shame campaign that started on social media and was picked up and spearheaded by the mainstream media.

Most retailers removed them long before those rules were even drafted as a result of said campaign.

They were ultimately replaced with something much worse. The decision to put disposable vapes on the checkout is 100% a choice by said retailers.

Lol this is the same archetype as "I'm not racist but..."

"I love freedom but north Korea seems pretty great ...."

except the 241 HFSS legislation is not all enacted .... ie. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2023/jun/17/ban-two-for-one-junk-food-deals-delayed-two-years
starmer once again procrastinating - these are low hanging fruit.

vape shops proliferation - good point - why is our local Cambs council granting permission for vape shops (high street is mostly full of barbers/hair/nails/charity shops)

why is Asos man actually raising the smoking issue at all, is it just a distraction from German trip hiatus, he could/should be prioritizing legislation for HFSS foodstuffs and their advertising ..

Your link clearly says Sunak delayed the enactment of the legislation. Not sure why you are suggesting starmer is procrastinating here?

The new government has frankly got bigger fish to fry, the HFSS legislation isn’t going to stop fat people being fat, all it does it make campaigners feel better about it.

I’m not even sure BOGOF is even a thing anymore.

I think the fact that vapes are often discarded by a minority and cause unsightly litter for a majority is enough reason alone to ban them. Plus they are not recyclable. Vapes are a cynical product marketed as help for quitting smoking but they just get people addicted. The vapers would be better off health wise and financially if they never touched them in the first place, I am more than happy to see a ban. When it comes to addictive substances that serve no purpose, people need to be protected from themselves and pointless addiction. Plus it will save them from a higher probability of cancer in later life. It's an excellent decision in my opinion.

Those things are not to argue about, they are examples simply following your own logic.

I guess i did not go far enough or I've simply not said anything that you disagree with.

I don't understand why you think the right thing to do is to remove freedom and choice from people.

Your vote to ban smoking for example, would be exactly the same thing as me voting to force you to smoke.

There is a small cost of smoking on the NHS, which i assume is the only consideration. My solution to that is to abolish the NHS.

But going past those examples we can simply jump to eugenics.
