like East Ukraine is being attacked for wanting independence or to be separate from ukraine, they should decide their own fate.

Just like the sudentland 'germans' in Czechoslovakia prior to world war 2? There's large ethic Russian populations in the Baltic states to so I guess your ok if the Russians 'assist' any rebels that pop up there whilst pretending that there doing no such thing. Only fair that Russia get to join up the main land with the Kalingrad enclave eh? Perhaps they could decide their fate like the Crimean peninsula did with a shotgun referendum complete with intimidation of the 'wrong' voters?

yh they did Donbass status referendums, 2014

which weren't recognised go figure

They werent even recognised by Russia. I'm figuring because they were massively illegal and conducted under threat of violence? so couldn't be independently verified and included various tricks like cities like maruipol of millions of people having only 5 voting stations and the ballot papers being printed from normal printers withd no protective features to prevent mass-duplication.

Cant wait for all the minorities in Russia to get a vote at setting up their own countries.....

Have to wonder how long Russia will put up with being badgered over Ukraine, its slowly easing towards Putin having to make a brinkmanship type move or look weak at home.

I would say that looks a lot like a T72-B3.

And a T-72BM.

And a T-72B with some BM upgrades.

And most other T-72 variants with a few BM upgrades, I.E the Ukrainian T72-M1.

I am not trying to be a jerk here, I do honestly agree it looks a lot like a T72-B3, however I really think it's worth stressing it could just as well be a different tank with upgrades. Especially considering that due to Kievs T-64 losses they are now pretty much launching their stockpiled T-72s out of the maintenance bays with whatever compatible bits they can stick on them (it's faster to update the stored T-72's then the stored T-80s and T-64s).

the B3 removed the IR search light on the right side of the turret front , whereas the B and BM didn't.

since those pictures don't show a 12 inch dinner plate affixed to the turret , its not a bolt on upgrade ;)

also they are not new build M1`s - the T72-M1 has a row of smoke launchers fixed to the front of the turret not on the left hand side

The B3 didn't remove the IR search light it just didn't fit it, the B3 is basically a cheaper to produce downgrade of the BM design, and most T-72's including Ukraines can be upgraded to BM standard. Like I said before, due to the rate they are losing their T-64BMs they are currently reactivating their stored T-72s as they can be brought operational and upgraded quicker than their stored T-64/T-80, and are bolting on what they have.

Those smoke launchers are moved to the left hand side if the T72-M1 is upgraded with Relikt or Kontakt-5.

I do agree though it is most likely an actual T-72B3, it's just annoying that we don't know for sure. Last September everyone thought a tank seen in Ukraine was a T-72B3 and it looked just like one until somebody inspected it up close and found it to be an upgraded late 80's T-72B. If would have been great if the guys in the video could have stopped to check out the tank :(

Presumably you'd have supported Scottish separatists attacking and annexing Glasgow?

For sure, if we'd had a nazi coup, handily arranged by elements of the US state dept, and were behaving in a typically nazi manner towards decent Scotish natives in the place of their birth, motivated by myths and legends from ww2.

So the Ukrianians had a Nazi coup?

/is confused

It's one of those exaggerations that snowballs, basically because the previous government was overthrown that apparently makes it a coup in some peoples eyes and the new elected government a junta (even if the east had been allowed to participate in voting properly he would still have won).

The interim and elected government really didn't do themselves any favours by announcing changes/laws that pretty much amounted to persecution of the ethnic Russia populace, hence why they get referred to as fascists/Nazis by those in the east and some people on the internet.

I think though the thales sight is the biggest give away (especially on the `captured` B3) - since Ukraine use SAGEM sights on their upgrades!

The THALES kit is factory fitted on the M1 ;

reading around the `net - it does seem the `Rogatka` or B2 (BM nato name) didn't enter service on cost grounds - hence why they fielded the B3M

seems to be something like 30 different varints of the damn tank!

oh and I think Ukraine are fielding mostly T-64`s - supposed to be a better tank than the T72!

I do wonder what the lose rate is - Ukraine cant build T-84`s fast enough

tinfoil hat time.

Yeah :(

Basically, Ukraine manufactured the T-64 in the USSR days, Russia later manufactured the T-72, and both built the T-80. After the USSR fell Russia carried on with T-72 building/evolving and Ukraine carried on with T-64 building/evolving, and both carried on T-80 development as did a number of former USSR republics (Russia creating the T-90, Ukraine creating the T-84). Sort of like right/left Twix :D (if you've seen that advert).

As a result a brand new T-64BM will smoke a much older T-72/T-80.

I do wonder what the lose rate is - Ukraine cant build T-84`s fast enough

According to reports, Ukraine started 2014 with 135x T-64BM, 600x T-64BV and 5x T-84. Plus 170 odd T-80, ~1000 T-64B and 1000+ T-72 all in storage.

Since then well over a hundred T-64BV and dozens of T-64BM have been destroyed or captured, as a result they are frantically trying to convert stored T-64B to BM standard and get them operational plus they have also started re-activating their T-72s and sending them to the front lines with whatever upgrades they can make work (I.E Relikt, Kontakt-5, etc).

think kontakt-1 is easier to apply than kontakt -5 (don't think they have relikt - its too new)

how many tanks has Russia los so far you think?

President Putin stands strong promoting peace and stability, and urging the Kiev Junta not to kill their own Nazi troops for surrendering.

Vladimir, the greatest leader since Churchill!
