RAF Rivet over the black sea at the moment, that takes some guts

Been awhile since they done that pattern - but with the AWACS and RQ-4s, etc. up they'd see anything coming a long way off - and they certainly aren't out there alone.

EDIT: I do wonder if Russia has been making overt threats towards the RQ-4 - few nights ago there was a QRA flight out of Romania that approached it then returned and now the Rivet Joint out there upping the ante if Russia makes moves towards the drone.

I would be careful posting stuff from this account he seems to have caused a stir in the OSINT community by posting alleged OPSec info about a raid he supposedly went on into Kherson where he openly admitted dressing as both a civilian and Russian military, so he's basically claiming to be in Ukraine fighting for Ukraine leaking operation info and admitting to war crimes whilst also endangering civilians with his claim that his team are infilitrating Russian occupied areas dressed as civilians. The OSINT community called him out on it and his response was to block most of them

Worth knowing. This particular story has been confirmed by the Mayor of Mariupol.

Seems to be a whole lot of drama around that account - I've not really followed it though to know what is what.

Sadly a lot of the OSINT community and other sources I've been using are mostly just amplifying or linking/re-Tweeting the media at the moment rather than the kind of investigative work or deep dives which some were doing before the invasion started.

Yes don’t post that.

A Russian army helicopter violated Finland's airspace in an apparent attempt to frighten the country as it readies to join NATO.

The military Mi-17 transport chopper flew 2-3 miles inside the Finnish border after 10.30 this morning (7.30am GMT), according to the country's Ministry of Defence.

I have substantial suspicions that the west is ratting out russian activities to ukraine.

I dare say a ww1 artillery unit could also flatten an important location if a third party was sending them accurate coordinates and intel.

Artillery is an area bombardment weapon not a precision tool. It blankets the area and as such it was a lucky hit, regardless if they knew where some person was in the terrain.

Nope, Royal Artillery are nicknamed the long range snipers. 1st shot kill.

There are from memory "precision" artillery shells that can make it much more precise, they're a lot more expensive but from what I understand if you wanted to make sure you got someone and you didn't want to use say a cruise missile (or didn't have one), you can use a smart shell, and if you use say one or two in a much larger barrage of "normal" ones it's very hard to tell it's been used.

there was a video the other day where it appeared the first shell hit directly on some sort of HQ/command tent, whilst other shells were hitting around it which would have been a really really lucky shot...

Even "normal" shells can be quite accurate if you've got the right equipment, good QC on the shells, and a crew who are experienced and very well trained (IIRC UK and US forces like to try for "tight clusters" of concentrated fire when aiming at a specific target as it saves on logistics and reduces how much time the enemy has for counter battery). Russian Artillery tends to be cheap, plentiful and basically "if it hits the ground it's good".
It's all about how you train for it, how good you are, and the specific purpose.

I like the fact that the germans were stumped during ww2 that they couldn't find any examples of the Royal Artillerys autoloading howitzers.

They didn't exist, the crews were just exceptionally drilled.

A well aged cartoon from 1982.
