That annoys me - "all" they need to do is basically the same again but updated with today's tech - nothing puts the fear of god into your enemies like a strafing run from an A10.

The problem is, we're not always going to be fighting an insurgency. In future it seems that with China's rise and it's ambitions in the Pacific, plus the possibility of confrontation with Russia it seems, then it's wise to prepare for a future conflict that will involve fighting a peer state equipped with sophisticated air defences, an environment in which the likes of an A-10 won't survive.

Genuine mistake, I noticed that misspelled nickname later, no offense meant.

75% of russians would re-elect Putin as their president and 85% of them are happy with his current presidency. Hardly a decent majority...

only 36% of all that voted in 2010 , voted for the current tory government....

Anyone else see the article in the Sunday Times about how poorly trained and equipped the Ukraine troops are? No wonder they are having little success against the well trained well equipped 'volunteer' Russian fighters that have gone to help the separatists.

I wonder how long a conflict between 2 technologically advanced parties would continue for, before the super planes etc are having to be replaced by more inferior vehicles/planes etc.

Pretty much. Its hard to get a clear picture but a lot were/are conscripts or volunteers and dont forget essentially losing their Navy too when Crimea was seized.

This should have happened sooner instead of relying on sanctions alone. Although the US are already scheduled for something similiar in Spring.

Russian newspaper leaks Kremlin policy document on Ukraine takeover

Novaya Gazeta has leaked the document, which it says was written by policy officials inside the Kremlin in the period between February 4 and 12 - just before the Euromaidan massacre and before the former president fled the country.

The document lists Russia's takeover of Crimea, the need for a Russian PR campaign to win hearts and minds, and calls for a referendum in eastern Ukraine to give the appearance of legitimacy.

Well the issue is that Ukraine lacks stand-off missiles. If say NATO and Russia went to war, we'd use our large arsenal of stand-off missiles to degrade Russian anti-air capabilities before entering Russian airspace. That is pretty much standard military doctrine for achieving air supremacy.

If we could equip the Ukrainians with stand-off missiles, they'd be able to 'bomb' the Russians from deep within Ukrainian airspace. The UK has the excellent Storm Shadow which is very well regarded, but alas Ukraine has no aircraft which are a suitable platform. Plus, they are £1m a pop!

Already bought and paid for and probably coming to, or already at, their shelf life. All the more reason to use them :p

David Cameron is a ****.
Sending troops to train the Ukraine forces for Gods sake!!

The British empire is dead, we are a small island with barely enough resources to look after our own affairs.

We are hardly in a position to call Russia after the 'Weapons of Mass destruction' farce

And people are already talking about mission creep. But then the last time we had boots on the ground in a rebel v government situation was Libya, where there were supposed to be no boots on the ground...

only 36% of all that voted in 2010 , voted for the current tory government....

That's why we have a coalition... Whereas labour got 35% of the vote in 2005 and got an outright majority...

And people wonder why all Labour are so against changing constituency boundaries to make them more even?;)

No significant mission creep to speak of tho.

But people instantly talk about mission creep with any military deployment because of the past.

Unfortunately the past shows that we generally overstep our bounds in almost ever single conflict in recent years.

That's not suggesting there is currently mission creep, rather that this so called "training" group may not only be training in the near future...

Russian is a nationality, Judaism is not.

You're entirely missing the point.

Firstly, Israel considers itself to be the homeland of the Jews. The Jewish identity is undeniably complex, but most people accept that it is both a religion and an ethnic group. Not everyone may agree on that point, but Israel is clear on it.

The anti-semites make the argument that attacking Israel is not the same as attacking the Jewish people, because Israel is simply the state and not the people. So when they say 'burn Israel' what they actually mean is 'burn the Israeli state'. Which is why I said (facetiously) the calls to nuke 'Russia' were fine, because obviously it meant as a reference to the Russian state and not the Russian people.

What that argument ignores of course is that the "state" of an ethnic body such as Russia or Israel is the political manifestation of the nation. Thus an attach on the state IS an attack on the people.
