That was very obvious even without Putin admitting to it. Another reason for trolling russophiles to get real and start using their own opinion instead of that of a russian propaganda.

Slightly Twilight zone update from Vice's Russian Roulette series

Not so much a rush to aid them then
I find it odd he's announcing it as if he was forced to take crimea to save Yanukovych in that second quote. The man was hundreds of miles away in donestk and kharkiv at that time.

The trailer for The Path To The Motherland
Hmmm The Title for the documentary that Putin chose to speak for sounds a bit retro doesn't it?

It is just the way that trailer was cut, Putin saved Yanukovych because he was his loyal servant. Still, it amazes me how stupid Putin is - he admitted those little green men in Crimea were indeed russian soldiers and now he also admitted the Crimea invasion was planned long time ago. Not that we didn't know that, but still.

All politics is local politics I guess. Might as well spend the time bigging himself up on the documentary just in case his approval rate slips below 98% :o

Fascinating article on the scale of Russian military involvement in eastern Ukraine and how stretched they are as a result. Wonder what will happen next? Although the cease fire seems to be holding I don't think the status quo is acceptable for Russia or Ukraine long term.

I think it is acceptable for Russia, from certain points of view. Crimeea is now Russian territory and the areas in Eastern Ukraine will have a fate similar to those in Georgia or Moldova. On the other hand, the situation is dire for Russia economically. Fake patriotism can prevent social disruptions in the short term but it won't feed people in the long term.

Here's the report its referencing in full if you fancy a read.

Bellingcat artillery report as well > https://www.bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-europe/2015/02/17/origin-of-artillery-attacks/

Yeah its really interesting. Makes you wonder though what will happen next on the push for mariupol though. Latest Vice news report visited a factory in mariupol that had 25k workers and contributed 20/25% of ukraines foreign currency income. Would be a game changer if that fell.

Market Vector Russia ETF Trust RSX 3.06% was down more than 1.5 percent Friday after news came out about the Kremlin preparing a major announcement. A source in the Russian President Vladimir Putin’s press service, heads of the most relevant media were asked to be ready for a possible press conference in the next few days, Vlasti.net reported.

Alexei Mukhin, Director General of the Centre for Political Information confirmed the rumor, anticipating that “something important” will happen. When prompted about Putin’s health condition, Mukhin neither confirmed confirmed or denied that Putin is currently “incapacitated.”

As an aside, wasn't there a grumbling the other day about Putin offering help to the Argentinians forcing us to spend more on defending the Falklands.

If there is any truth in it the point of the consequences of meddling in other peoples back yards seems to me to be well made.

I would hate for us to get into another south Atlantic war simply because we couldn't keep our noses out of Russian affairs.

Russia and Argentina are currently negotiating a deal to lease 16 Su-24 'Fencer' aircraft. These would be a significant upgrade to the Argenitian airforce but they're still pretty old planes - crucially though these planes can reach the Falklands from Argentina without the need for mid-air refuelling. The deal has not yet been signed, nevertheless the Defence secretary was forced announce upgrading our defences there. I doubt this is anything more than mischief making by both Putin and de Kirchner.

Not sure what you mean by meddling in people's back yards. Surely the only country doing that is Russia by meddling in Ukraine.

The Su-24 isn't really a "significant" upgrade, they wouldn't have made a difference in the 80's and today they are more of a side-grade as they are almost as outdated as the Mirage aircraft they will replace. Argentina's motivations are that the Mirage are French and the Argentine military don't trust the French after what they saw as a betrayal during the Falklands war, so leasing/buying planes from Russia is better than paying France for parts to maintain the Mirages.

Before jumping, Mykhailo Chechetov wrote a note. He said he had “no moral strength” to live, and thanked people for their support. Then he stepped out of the window of his 17th-floor apartment, leaving his slippers behind for his wife to find later.

Chechetov was once a senior member of Ukraine’s Party of Regions, which had a strong grip on power until the revolution a year ago. His death on 28 February was the second in a string of apparent suicides by top members of the party which until last year had dominated Ukrainian politics. Four such officials died within several weeks. All of them were under criminal investigation by the incumbent authorities.

The leader of the Party of Regions, the former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, fled the nation at the height of the Maidan revolution, leaving his allies stunned and struggling to accept a new reality. The party started disintegrating rapidly. Many of its members ended up facing trials for corruption, extortion, abuse of office and even murder.

Whether they are real suicides or instigate by someone else (Russia cleaning up "dead" ends or the new Ukranian government cleaning up) it's a shame so many are dying. I get the impression tbere is a witch hunt going on, which is common after changes in government in Ukraine...

I particularly like the end of the story.

Ukraine has a history of political prosecutions. Yanukovych jailed his former opponents Yulia Tymoshenko and Yuriy Lutsenko soon after being elected in 2010. The European court of human rights said both cases were politically motivated.

Gerashchenko said the difference is that the charges against Tymoshenko and Lutsenko were trumped up, and they did not feel any guilt.

He said: “If these people (from the Party of Regions) did not feel guilty, they would not end their lives, they would go and fight in courts like Tymoshenko and Lutsenko. They would fight with their heads raised up high.”
I'm sure Yanukovych said the same in 2010...

I'd suspect they are jumping because they don't want to go to prison or whatever for corruption, before I'd suspect them of being pushed out by dodgy Russian agents.
