On the flipside I don't think the Russians have won a war in the Crimea. (Though I could be wrong as I'm no history buff).

Ironically they've won all the big wars in the crimea, they're as hard to beat as the Afghans, scarily true about the Germans though.

Good points on the nuke boasts, that stupid street thug statement will cost them the revolution and very possibly their lives, surely intelligent Ukrainian patriots will remove them before the Russians do it for us.

^^ I'm not well versed on Crimean history but they lost most of the big wars I know of off the top of my head - they didn't win the Crimean War and technically the Crimean Offensive was a loss for both sides though can be considered a Russian victory as the Germans pulled back in the end (both sides got completely slaughtered in the fighting).

Definitely not somewhere I'd want to be involved in a war regardless of who has won or lost its the scene of some of the bloodiest battles in history.

John Kerry said:
“You just don’t invade another country on phony pretext in order to assert your interests,” US Secretary of State John Kerry said. “It’s really 19th century behaviour in the 21st century.”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Seriously I think I just ruptured something laughing XD

I bet the Ukraines feel right mugs now giving up their Nuclear weapons, now Russia can just walk all over them.

The thing is though the Ukraine had the 3rd biggest stockpile in the world, if their leader has big enough balls he could try and bluff Russia that they kept a couple for a rainy day :P

They don't need to bluff, the country has ready access to uranium, still have people with the expertise and civillian facilities already in operation, they could repurpose for weaponised production extremely quickly (making a few assumptions).

On another note I'd been thinking something was a bit off with all the pictures of unknown/"Russian" forces - stuff is a bit too pristine, postures a bit wrong, guns look like they've never been fired, etc. was thinking at first they might have been logistic units dressed up a bit as most are definitely not special forces or regular army but seems most of them are private contractors.

what did we really expect after pumping the opposion billions of dollars to uprise, that russia would'nt notice? kerry and hague are probably the enemys of humanity "we must bomb syria now" the hypracy of the us. the west, is a sick joke.

Now now... we didnt pump billions..... That is serious over-exaduration...

Amazing hypocrisy by the USA once again!

John Kerry, USA Secretary of State, talking about the Russia/Ukraine situation - "You don't just, in the 21st century, behave in 19th century fashion by invading another country on a completely trumped-up pretext''

EDIT: Oh, looks like other people have noticed the comments already haha

Are sanctions and a confiscation of Russian assets a possibility here? It would be pretty easy to economically throttle Russia here if we want to but it means loosing Russian support else where in the world such as dealing with Iran , Syria etc.

Russia can just turn the gas taps off if the west gets shirty with them economically.

Sky News or the BBC don't give any backstory or reasons of why Russia have taken this action.

The only thing you hear from them is bad scary Putin, sovereign sovereign sovereign.

Yes (sorry Chelsea fans), William Hague raised the possibility yesterday before flying to Kiev. You can't lose something you never had.

It can do, but it'd be shooting itself in the foot. Russia needs Western money as much as some countries in Europe need Russian gas, maybe moreso as Spring is around the corner when the lack of gas is an inconvenience rather than a life or death situation. The US is desperate to sell its gas surplus to Europe as well.

Well there is a problem, Russian has been an official language in Ukraine and that made everyone happy....

It is kinda big thing really if a new government which comes in removes it as an official language, in a country where nearly half speak Russian.

I am sure you would understand why east and south feel hostility to new government, this was first law they passed.... Along with bans and removing of Soviet memrobilia a.k.a lenin statues and WW2 statues to fallen soldiers...

Dont you think this is a bit stupid to do first thing once you are in parliament??

What kind of message does that send out to Russian speaking population??? They got into Parliament did not discuss how to get country on track and functioning, they were deciding on how to remove Russian language and everything that reminded them of Russia or Soviet Union... As I said, how dumb do you have to be to do this....

I lost all support for Maidan thing since that... Those people do not understand simple things, how can you trust them to run a country.

Why would the Ukraine want Russian war memorials? The Soviet occupation of Ukraine only let up 20 years ago after decades of abuse. ..

I was counting ww2 as 1 war and I thought they beat us France and Turkey in "the" Crimean war.

Investors are dumping the Ruble and Russian stocks, Gazprom and the main Russian banks are down 10-12%.

In the long term, Putin's foreign policy is an inept one - after more than decade in power he has no allies, just satellites. He cultivated strained relations with every major power in his vicinity, the US, the EU, China, Japan and he has nothing to fall back on if the country's economy goes in the red. Russia's industry is a mess, as is its infrastructure so it will be very difficult for Putin to handle things if money continues to bleed out of the country.

If the West's response is aimed at further hurting the Russian economy, it won't be long before the Russian oligarchs start feeling the pain, at which point Putin will be forced to take a step back.

The ones being referred to are in memoriam to Soviet (AKA Ukranian, Russian, etc) soldiers who died fighting the Nazi's to liberate the Ukraine.

Lenin died in WW2?

Hague makes me feel physically sick whenever he's on tv.

It's good to see some decisiveness from a world leader, not since Lady Thatcher sprang into action over the Falklands has someone just got on with things without interminable chattering and "meetings". I have to respect Putin's resolve. having his hand on the gas pipelines will help that resolve, of course.

At least it takes some attention from the dump called South Africa getting apoplectic over Pistorious, and the bad dress sense, bad taste, and egomania of the Academy Awards.
