Dear Germany,
can I have a Leopard tank please? I promise I will not use it for nefarious purposes. About 20 shells will be fine.

Thanks,

Don't think so, they've always been a letdown.
Reports that one floated away turned out to be just a load of hot air.

Why are Germany dragging their feet?
There's multiple reasons mostly political and mostly involving WW2, but an important one is that German tanks rolling into eastern Europe would be an epic boon for Putin in the infowar and result in a surge of Russian volunteers (including veterans), so unless they are going to be sending hundreds of tanks then it would harm Ukraine more than help.

Challengers? We only have 148 Challenger III's. Those were upgraded from CII's. The rest we were keeping around for parts or whatever. Something like 238 or something total tanks. So we literally don't have 100 to give of CII's.
We don't have any challenger IIIs at the moment, only start to be delivered in 2027 iirc.

I think it's quite a reasonable question whether the challenger III upgrades still make sense, and whether giving more tanks to Ukraine might be a better use... Also we may well want more / different tanks after learning lessons from Ukraine...

Then again also fair comment that logistics will be harder for them than leopards, so certainly at the moment the main value is diplomatic, convincing other countries (cough Germany cough) to do the same. If we gave them more then they could actually be a very capable tank force though.

Personally I say give Ukraine as many working tanks as possible (as long as they want them), with as much support as possible.

Thanks for the clarification. I hadn't realized that we don't actually have them modified yet! eek.
