Ukraine have respected the borders across the NE of Ukraine so I don't see any reason why they would fail to do so elsewhere

I am pretty sure they have very very clear instructions to not cross into Russia.
I'm sure that's a requirement of getting continued help. Personally I think they should be allowed to target missile sites and bombers targetting them.
Obviously a rogue missile destroying a block of flats in Russia would not go down well at all.

It is a bit weird but most training in the UK they use the SA80s, while for live fire practise they use AK pattern rifles.
Using SA80s for training and something else when you actually want a bullet to come out of the gun isn't weird it's common sense :D

What about a verte one?

True story, and probably something they wouldn't be allowed to do these days, there was some kind of recruitment thing they did at school, first had an army team come and setup an obstacle course at school, etc. then we did a school trip to an army base. When we arrived we were assembled outside for some kind of talk and at the end a bunch of soldiers with ghillie type setups with SA80s w/ BFAs came out of the bushes shouting and firing full auto. Personally I was in awe they'd been there all the time completely invisible but I think a few kids **** themselves. Seem a bit of a crazy idea looking back on it with a bunch of 14-15 year old kids.

Strangely enough I ended up visiting the same base a few years later for work completely unrelated.

On the subject of air defence, I was talking about this with a friend today and one of the big problems Russia has right now is it's almost complete lack of active anti-air escorts as it retired most of them years ago due to basing their military strategies' around the assumption that they would always be operating under friendly or at least neutral skies.

Back in the day the USSR used ZSU-23-4 anti air units which were essentially a PT-76 tank hull with a rotating turret on the top carrying four autocannons and a radar unit, these would travel with the tanks and other vehicles and be able to shoot down any incoming missiles or any aircraft that got too close (the were also useful in mountainous or urban areas as they could elevate their guns almost vertically). These were almost all retired in the Russian forces during Putin's presidency as the belief was that air supremacy or at least the containment of enemy air forces would allow S-x00, Buk and Pantsir to get into position and set up unhindered, and so there was no real need for troops/armour to have any AA escorts. That has proven to be a terrible misjudgement, as evidenced by the S-400 truck a few pages back that was blown up while driving to it's setup location.

The interesting thing is that Russia-friendly countries like Syria and Iran still have hundreds of them each and so there is a chance Russia would be able to acquire some (or maybe is already negotiating this ready for their planned offensive), this would cause problems for Ukraine.

On the flip side, non-Russia friendly countries like Poland still have quite a few and so Ukraine too may be able to source some, which would make short work of any Iranian drone threats.

For reference this is the type of thing being referenced:

Seen quite a few Shilkas and the likes used by the Russians which seem to have been adapted for anti-infantry work with steel plates welded on which would inhibit their ability to do anti-air and usually their radars removed anyhow.

Though Ukraine seems to be using them for ground support as well in that kind of way.

Well I'm not going to complain about the Russian's wasting what little equipment they have :)
