The only issue with tanks (and basically any vehicle) is that they are drone/personal AT fodder. Now double that with the lack of training. There must be a loss rate for Ukraine to request more.
I'd have thought mines would be the bigger concern. The Russians must have spent the last few months absolutely littering the areas under their control with them.

Suspect the MBTs will help breach the lines and then play catchup to the bradleys etc in sweeping moves much like the Yooks made late last year.

Its the same tactic the US used in Iraq and the Yooks used last year.
Already proven to be very good against static defense lines and Russian doctrine of limited in the field movement from prescribed orders means its likely to be highly effective again.
Basically rush the line, create a breech, pour through, grab significant points such as crossroads, towns etc. Forces in static positions end up nigh on cut off, virtually surrounded and highly likely to surrender.

Going to be interesting to see how many more "fully working" tanks Russia have to pull out of storage, or should I say interesting to see how many they actually have left ;)

They recently pulled another approx. couple of hundred in total T-80s and 90s (some of them export models) out of storage, I believe that is about it, probably still another 100 or so T-72A or Ms they can put back into service fairly quickly (possibly were in the process of being reactivated to give to Syria), after that by their own estimation it will take 2-3 years to put another 800 tanks back into service.

There is a recent picture from a drone somewhere of one of the main tank parking lots with about 300 T-62 models and about 300 T-72s and about 2/3rds have been stripped heavily for parts.

EDIT: That is contingent on them not ramping up industrial mobilisation though - which would be hard to estimate the impact of.

(Reuters) - Slovakia is ready to send 30 T-72 tanks to Ukraine "immediately" provided it can receive Western tanks to replace them, Defence Minister Jaroslav Nad said on Wednesday.

I agree. However, only sending 14 and keeping 241 in reserve?

Especially for us as an island nation and with nukes and effective long range defences. We could give many more and replace them fairly quickly too. It’s also not like they’re being wasted, they are diminishing the capability of a direct rival. We’ve seen how ineffective Russia has been since drip feeding in arms, I worry about the same with a handful of tanks from us, albeit with some pretty tough armour.

It’s such an amazing opportunity for every country to modernise.

We could. However Challenger 2 tanks aren't particularly useful to Ukraine. They require specialist ammunition that's unique to the challenger. The Challenger 3 will built with a 120mm smoothbore barrel, same as Abrams, Leopard and Leclerc's so that it can use standard Nato spec ammo.

Us sending 14 was mostly of political significance to get the ball rolling, and to share collective responsibility. It could even be that those 14 were already in Poland for the recent joint manoeuvres.

* Once the weapon is formally announced, the Russians say: This weapon system doesn't matter anymore and we don't care that that country is sending them, we have studied it and learned its secrets, it will be quickly destroyed by our army
In fairness they do seem super effective at destroying them, they managed to take out several Bradleys before any had arrived in Ukraine.

Me too.

But there's some speculation regarding a recent seemingly bizarre order from the Kremlin that Russian troops must be clean shaven. The only practical military reason for that is so that a gas mask will work properly.
This is true from a practical standpoint, but power-tripping "repect my author-a-tie" types do stuff like this to demonstrate their power over subordinates too.

I hope our intel pays close attention to bio/chem threats in light of this info, but it could also just be a "I'm your new boss now" thing.
