I fear his next step will be chemical / biological.

If I can't have it, no-one can desperation.

Surprised it hasn’t happened already tbh. The US have probably made it very clear what’ll happen e.g. when Syria did similar. Zero ***** were given, one of the few moments I liked Trumps approach.

Wrong country

Well one of our direct rivals and certainly buddies up with the main one.

So apparently Putin is trying to do a deal with the Taliban to get all the weapons America left behind in Afghanistan.

As we know its a substantial amount of around 50 thousand vehicles. All good stuff.

How will the US react to that I wonder.

US withdrawal was done like amateur's not professional's and now Putin most likely will welcome this deal with open arms.

I thought the US had wound down most of it's stuff in the run up to the withdrawl and there was hardly anything left, what was left was pretty much useless?

I know they left some aircraft and vehicles, but they'd all been stripped/disabled beyond any repair.

AFAIK most of the more significant kit was stripped/disabled - there was quite a lot of stuff like pickups, etc. just left parked up though and a fair quantity of weapons - in the Afghan thread I posted a video where one security group was withdrawn leaving 100s of rifles, 10s of thousands of rounds of ammo, grenades and body armour just stacked up in their armoury.

EDIT: They also got a fair few light armoured vehicles from Afghan forces, etc. which simply handed them over when things went south.

I can't imagine the Taliban handing anything half decent over to Russia, and even if they did - I can't imagine it finding it's way to the actual troops in the field, I imagine it would be stolen/sold off to someone else way before then due to corruption...

Rumours were a lot of the better stuff was sent to Pakistan as repayments but I don't know much about that and obviously the Taliban are going to want to be able to maintain a strong military capability.

One slightly worrying side of that though - apparently a lot of night vision gear was sent to the Afghan army and US supplies of it were also abandoned in the pull out - something which Russian forces more generally are lacking in while Ukraine has better access to such gear.

I mean, we are but there comes a point where Russias invasion of Ukraine causes us enough pain that we actually act. More pain = more action.

Are you signing up first for the army then? Jumping in your fighter jet.
How old are you? I'm genuinely interested in what age peoples thirst for more war is?

The intrigue of a young persons mind I can understand. I remember in 2003 the good vs evil line was easily won over by the UK population portrayed by the mainstream media about Iraq.
Iraq the "baddies" who could take us out in 45 minutes with a nuclear bomb. This is what we were sold. Seeing the night skylines of the missiles going over was shamefully interesting.

I do get why war can repeat, when enough time passes the horrors of it are not in the minds of the present day population.

Amazing they left so much behind. Just as incredible that they took so much gear in the first place.

I'm genuinely intrigued why a situation with so much human misery would be ripe for someone to troll, how damaged do you have to be as a person?

Its not a troll, Russia will keep hold of the Eastern regions of Ukraine by whatever means necessary now.

The prolonging of it is absolutely pointless.
The regions were lost because of what happened in 2014.

Ukraine and the wider world should accept that and negotiate a peace deal.

Or we going to keep using Ukraine to punish Russia in a proxy, put Ukraine in more and more debt, cause more suffering on both sides.

Afghanistan was a mess - a lot of gear was sent due to the supposed size of the Afghan army which was being built up which to a large extent didn't exist except on paper and the lack of any real long term nation building plan by the US.

@sityeuropa - you remember 2003 very differently to me. I can’t remember anyone specifically supporting the invasion of Iraq. I do remember a reported 1m people on the streets of London protesting it.

Only Russia has showed no intent at stopping at the eastern regions anyhow... not to mention they've trashed any possibility of having a negotiation in good faith even if Ukraine attempted it (and lets not even go there as to the West's history when it comes to the UN, etc.).

There is no way out of this which ends in a good way, not now, except maybe completely fighting Putin's forces to a halt in the next few weeks so they are forced to leave of their own accord because they are so expended and I just can't see the training and hardware getting there in time to do that especially with the political delays.

The only way any kind of peace could be negotiated with Russia now is after Putin, Lavrov, etc. go even if there was a chance a year ago.

It certainly was in favour of at the time for sure. The likes of George Galloway was always getting grief for it.

I think Boris Johnson went over there to tell Zelensky Not to negotiate.

I think you have completely misinterpreted my post. By we, I mean the other countries around the world. We generally don't get involved in others affairs unless its for our own benefit. We don't have a moral compass on these things for the most part. We have a pain threshold as a country and as the world and Russia has pushed a lot of countries beyond the point they would tolerate.

No one has a thirst for more war but its not quite that simple is it. If you could invade other countries at will then you would be encouraging certain countries to do so. There are certain quarters who suggest that part of the reason "the west" has taken as much action and interest in Ukraine is because they want to send a message to China that you can't invade your neighbours without consequence.

Its a combination of factors that have led to the involvement of the rest of the world in this conflict and its nothing to do with a thirst for war. As to the "good" vs "evil" line in 2003, thats rubbish. They didn't win over the UK population. I don't think many people supported that action at all. Very few people I knew did. Most people thought the WMD argument was just a weak excuse.

70/30 in favour at the time.

We don't get involved in other peoples affairs? There is not a conflict we don't jump too.
Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, Ukraine.

We can't help but always stick our noses in front of the line.
