It's weird that Ukraine haven't decided to make a tactical retreat from Bakhmut, makes you wonder how badly attrited they actually are and why they don't have any reserves to build a new defensive line for them to retreat into

No plans to pull out apparently, couple of foreign legion fighters have mentioned 3 (or more?) convoys of irregular forces are on the way, Ukrainian ministry of defence guy said there was 2 battalions of heavy mechanized forces on the way (no idea if they are real or not). Ukraine has moved multiple batteries of artillery and rocket forces into range of Bakhmut.

What's more weird is what's going on in Vuhledar. The battle taking place has already become the largest and deadliest for armour with Russia already having lost 150 pieces of armour, most of which are tanks and IFVs. And these losses have come with signs that Russia has failed to learn lessons from the battle for Kyiv as it continues to try and drive these columns of armour down narrow roads that are covered by Ukranian artillery, anti tank units and lots and lots of mines - the Ukranians aren't just using standard 155 shells but also special shells from the Americans which scatters anti armour mines all over the road and area the Russians want to cross

And perhaps even more searing is the disregard for their fallen comrades - there are videos online showing one column trying to go down a road only to be blown to bits and now the road is covered with the bodies of dead Russians. Then later on the second column tries to move down the road and in these videos you see the Russians driving their armour right over the dead bodies of their comrades..

Yep I've read that the Russians will assault with vehicles, get blown up with mines, then the Ukrainians just relay more mines for the Russians to do it again

It's actually amazing that despite all the military tactic books out there on what works from Western military battles, the Russians just ignore everything and go their own way with tactics from the 1st world war

Is that the one with 2 Ukrainian tanks hidden in the tree line? one of the BMPs does actually try and help the first one which got blown up, and suffers the same fate, the rest just appear to ignore what is going on and charge on to their own destruction.

I don't think country or alert level matters when it comes to drones, they're going to be a massive problem in any war until tech gets up to scratch not only to detect them but to jam them without interfering with your own gear especially the smaller drones

They're going to be a big issue in any war, agreed, though the issue here was the relative lack of any security at all, very slack by Belarus/Russia. Even the good old mk1 eyeball was missing on this one!

I don't think you can reasonably assume that, in fact, I'd say it's rather likely the complete opposite is true, not to mention troops seem to have been sent into the area. Actually being able to withdraw everyone to such a defensive line without it turning into chaos and causing a heck of a lot of casualties is sadly another matter entirely, it's still a very tricky situation for them.

WANT!!!!!
Pretty sure that would be cost prohibitive to the USA though.

Edit: I have Ukrainian neighbors a few doors up from me. Turns out their relative worked -by chance- with my wife in Ukraine. Small world. Would be cool to give them.something like that.

Considering he's a much more valuable asset for Russia as a fighter pilot surely they'd do a decent trade for him?

I'm guessing Ukraine either didn't get the trade they wanted or just won't trade pilots?

Pilot probably has a better life expectancy in jail. Going back to Russia he'd either fall out of a window for being captured or thrown straight back into an aircraft to be a target for all the hand-held stuff. Wouldn't want to be a pilot on either side there !

Probably he will get traded anyway at some point despite the sentence - he wouldn't be the first Russian sent to prison and then got traded. Maybe it raises their trade value
