It will be challenging to get him the dock but it's far from meaningless. It shows that just because your the leader of major power doesn't exempt you from war crimes. And lets' be honest here, Putin has been doing loads of other crap to people and political opponents over the years which everyone has turned a blind eye too (Pavel Antov, Ravil Maganov, Boris Nemtsov, Boris Berezovsky, Natalia Estemirova, Alexander Litvinenko to name just a few all are people that spoke out and got killed for doing so) so this is long overdue IMO.
 
It's about writing history which is something Putin cares quite a lot about even if they pretend not to, it's obvious that nobody expects anyone to arrest him unless of course in the especially rare circumstance that Russia implodes and he tries to flee in which case it's no longer a political issue for countries sending the ol' black bag team to pick him up.

I also think it's a stab at the US as well for trying to get in the court's way so now the US has no choice but to wipe the egg off it's face on the issue.

Let's never get mislead here. Pootin wants Ukraine..it has nothing to do with defence against NATO. NATO is not an aggressor.

Ironically, Russia had the opportunity to join NATO at one point.
