Didn't Ukraine forcibly remove the independent Crimean government in 1995?

The pro Russian President won a massive majority, because most people who live in Crimea are Russian. Weird.

Didn't there used to be a bunch of Crimean natives who got shipped away by the USSR? So weird!

So Ukraine owns Crimea on that basis? Ukraine, Russia, and Crimea were all part of the USSR.

It fell to Ukraine, whether Russia liked it or not, and Russia doesn't really have more claim to it than Ukraine does, they didn't exist before the collapse of the USSR. They had a long-term lease on Sevastopol which was basically in perpetuity to get the port access they wanted.

Since 2014 they've occupied it and it would appear no one was willing or able to take it back, so before this conflict kicked off they had it anyway, so not really sure where you want to go beyond this, they already had Crimea even if unofficially.

I still maintain Russia could have officially gained Crimea diplomatically if they went to the negotiating table before invading and used it as a bargaining chip, instead they got greedy and wanted more.

Weird the west doesn’t take the same approach to Israel, regarding genociding the locals and supplanting them with European Jews along with similar claims of the land being historically jewish.

Yeah but Israel buys US weapons, so Lockheed Martin and Raytheon benefit. It basically boils down to what benefits the US military industrial complex, bizarrely the left in 2023 loves this
